The purpose of the Fall Midwater Trawl Survey when it began in 1967 was to monitor the distribution and relative abundace of age-0 striped bass (Morone saxatilis) within the San Francisco Estuary in order to evaluate potential water project effects on their survival. Over time, abundace indices were created for other fishes such as longfin smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys), delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), American shad (Alosa sapidissima), splittail (Pogonichthys macrolepidotus), and threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense). The database is used by various agencies and consultants for water quality evaluations in the upper San Francisco Estuary analyzed by biologists for long term monitoring. Fall Midwater Trawl (FMWT) stations were selected by having one station represent every 20,000 acre feet of water within an area.

The database represents young of the year pelagic fish captured at a station in relation to various environmental conditions (temp, salinity, clarity, and water flow) throughout the San Francisco Estuary. Most records come from fixed stations from San Pablo Bay to Stockton on the San Joaquin River and Hood on the Sacramento River. The following information represents general station location descriptions currently sampled by the FMWT (2004-present). San Pablo Bay = 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 310, 311, 314, 315, 321, 322, 323, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 334, 335, 336, 337, 338, 339; Napa River = 340, 341; West Suisun = 401, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, 408, 409, 410, 411, 412, 413, 414, 415, 416, 417, 418; Grizzly Bay = 601, 602, 603, 604; Montezuma Slough = 605, 606, 608; East Suisun = 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 507, 508, 509, 510, 511, 512, 513, 515, 516, 517, 518, 519; Lower Sacramento River = 72, 73, 701, 703, 704, 705, 706, 707, 708, 709, 710, 711, 712, 713, 715, 716, 717, 724, 735, 736; North Delta = 919, 920, 921, 922, 923; Lower San Joaquin River = 802, 804, 806, 807, 808, 809, 810, 811, 812, 813, 814, 815, 904, 905, 906, 908, 909; South Delta = 902, 910, 911, 912, 913, 914, 915; Mokelumne River = 903, 919, 920, 921, 922, 923. San Francisco Bay stations were collected until 1978. The data set began from 1967 to present time by the Department of Fish and Game in the Upper San Francisco Estuary. No surveys were completed in 1974, 1979, and September & December 1976. The Fall Midwater Trawl abundance index is calculated from 100 core stations sampled during September though December. The number of stations completed may vary from year to year, but index is the average catch divded by the weighted water volume within an area. From 1967 to 1977, survey length was variable, sometimes starting in July or August. From 1991 to 2001, the Spring Midwater Trawl survey was conducted from January through March to detect delta smelt distribution.
