Summary

This project constitutes an inventory of state parks in the San Joaquin Valley documenting the presence and distribution of rare and listed vertebrate species. These surveys were part of a large-scale project administered by California State Parks and funded by Bureau of Reclamation that included eight State Park units: - Caswell Memorial SP - Turlock Lake SRA - McConnell SRA - George J. Hatfield SRA - Great Valley Grasslands SP - San Luis Reservoir SRA (northern management units and Los Banos Reservoir unit) - Colonel Allensworth SHP - Tule Elk SR. The information was presented along with historic data from past surveys in assorted parks to help assess the role of State Parks in providing quality habitat for rare and listed vertebrate species in the San Joaquin Valley.

Description

This dataset includes reptile and amphibian observations in six San Joaquin Valley State Park units, including Caswell Memorial State Park, George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area, Great Valley Grasslands State Park, Los Baos Creek unit of San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, and Tule Elk State Natural Reserve. State parks that were surveyed for this group and which resulted in no observations include Turlock Lake SRA and McConnell SRA. Observations included special status species such as western pond turtle (Clemmys marmorata) and western spadefoot (Scaphiopus hammondii) and exotic species such as spiny soft-shelled turtle (Trionyx spiniferus) and northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens). Records are from surveys and incidental sightings (see SJV_Parks_Herps_Line.shp and SJV_Parks_Polygon.shp metadata) and only include data for which geographic coordinates were recorded. Surveys were conducted by contracted biologists from the University of California, Davis Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology in 2006 and 2007 and by CDPR staff.
