This project constitutes an inventory of state parks in the San Joaquin Valley documenting the presence and distribution of rare and listed vertebrate species. These surveys were part of a large-scale project administered by California State Parks and funded by Bureau of Reclamation that included eight State Park units: - Caswell Memorial SP - Turlock Lake SRA - McConnell SRA - George J. Hatfield SRA - Great Valley Grasslands SP - San Luis Reservoir SRA (northern management units & Los Banos Reservoir unit) - Colonel Allensworth SHP - Tule Elk SR. The information was presented along with historic data from past surveys in assorted parks to help assess the role of State Parks in providing quality habitat for rare and listed vertebrate species in the San Joaquin Valley.
This dataset includes San Joaquin kit fox and other canid observations in one San Joaquin Valley State Park unit, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. Data include both survey results and incidental sightings of individual canids and evidence of presence such as tracks and dens. No formal surveys of kit fox were conducted in the seven other state parks in this project. Surveys were conducted by contracted biologists from the University of California, Davis Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology in 2006 and 2007 and by CDPR staff.
