This project constitutes an inventory of state parks in the San Joaquin Valley documenting the presence and distribution of rare and listed vertebrate species. These surveys were part of a large-scale project administered by California State Parks and funded by Bureau of Reclamation that included eight State Park units: - Caswell Memorial SP - Turlock Lake SRA - McConnell SRA - George J. Hatfield SRA - Great Valley Grasslands SP - San Luis Reservoir SRA (northern management units and Los Banos Reservoir unit) - Colonel Allensworth SHP - Tule Elk SR. The information was presented along with historic data from past surveys in assorted parks to help assess the role of State Parks in providing quality habitat for rare and listed vertebrate species in the San Joaquin Valley.
This dataset includes burrowing owl observations in Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park and Tule Elk State Natural Reserve, conducted by contracted biologists from the University of California, Davis Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology in 2006 and 2007. The Burrowing Owl Consortium protocol (1993) was used in the design of all surveys, which covered large areas on foot and by automobile. State parks that were also surveyed for burrowing owl but resulted in no observations include San Luis Reservoir SRA (north management units and the Los Banos Reservoir unit) and Great Valley Grasslands SP. Data include numbers of burrows, adults and young observed on survey dates and incidentally. These data indicate species presence only, and should not be used to determine total burrowing owl productivity of each site. See SJV_Parks_Line or SJV_Parks_Polygon to see the survey plots used. This GIS shapefile includes all results associated with these surveys (both burrows and owls), along with incidental sightings.
