Summary

This dataset includes locations of completed wildlife crossing structures identified by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) as of April 2023

Description

***** For internal CDFW use only, do not redistribute. *****

The California Wildlife Crossings Database provides details on the number, type, location and important attributes of wildlife crossings across California. Caltrans users can enter new wildlife crossings into the database and edit existing records. Crossings are added if identified as a wildlife crossing in environmental compliance documents or permits during project development or are proven as a crossing through camera studies or other methods. Users enter information into an online survey form found at the internal Caltrans California Wildlife Crossings Database website. Additional information can be found in the California Wildlife Crossings Database User Guide ( https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=212670 ).

Description
The California Wildlife Crossings Database allows Caltrans users to enter newly planned or constructed wildlife crossings into a central inventory that stores the crossing details and associated photos and documents in an interactive geodatabase. The geodatabase is housed in the Caltrans ESRI ArcGIS Portal and the survey for data entry is programed using ESRI Survey123. Entering details on a wildlife crossing to add it to the database entries is done through an online survey form accessed through an internet browser.

For example, if Caltrans Laguna Culverts Project EA 01-23456 constructed three crossing culverts, each would be entered separately in its own survey. The first one entered would be assigned 1 for this field, the second 2 for this field, and the third 3 for this field. If two paired structures are used for one are for crossing a divided highway, each should have a unique number for this field and be entered separately into the database.

Field pmprefix_start
Alias Prefix - Postmile Start
* Data type String
* Width 255
* Precision 0
* Scale 0
Field description
Postmile prefix if applicable. If none, is is blank. As the highway changes and realignments and relinquishments occur on the highway, Caltrans uses postmile prefixes to differentiate the new postmile from the original postmile. Instead of re-postmiling the entire route, only the portion that is affected is re-postmiled. Because a postmile prefix distinguishes between two or more different locations that share the same numeric postmile, omitting or providing an incorrect prefix may indicate the wrong location. Postmile Prefix Code R - First realignment M - Realignment of R mileage L - Overlap postmile C - Commercial lanes D - Duplicate postmile at meandering county line G - Reposting of duplicate postmile at the end of a route H - Realignment of D mileage N - Realignment of M mileage S - Spur T - Temporary connection

The postmile of the location of the starting point of the crossing along the SHS. The starting point is the south or west end of the facility for all wildlife crossings in the database. For small underpasses perpendicular to the SHS travel lanes, the Postmile Start and Postmile End may be the same postmile number.

Field pmsuffix_start
Alias Suffix Postmile Start
* Data type String
* Width 255
* Precision 0
* Scale 0
Field description
Postmile suffix if applicable. If none, it will blank. The postmile suffix is used for independent alignments when the alignment separates and may have different lengths. Because a postmile suffix is required at independent alignments, omitting or providing an incorrect suffix could cause a reference to a non-existent postmile. R - Right independent alignment (eastbound or northbound) L - Left independent alignment (westbound or southbound) X- Unconstructed highway

* Data type String
* Width 1073741822
