The California Monitoring Plan (CMP) salmonid monitoring locations provides a summary of past and present monitoring locations for coho salmon, Chinook salmon, and steelhead. The locations consist of specific monitoring sites (fixed count stations, juvenile outmigrant traps) and centroids of sub-basins, watershed areas, or regions sampled using PIT tag arrays, spawning ground surveys, or snorkel surveys. The dataset includes population monitoring projects in California coastal watersheds and some coverage of monitoring projects within the Trinity River and Klamath River basins. This dataset does not include all locations for existing or past monitoring programs. The population metrics summarized at these locations are focused on the viable salmonid population (VSP) key characteristics: abundance, productivity, diversity, and spatial structure. The spatial information is intended to be compatible and link with tabular salmonid population data using the GEO_ID_PT field.
The California Monitoring Plan (CMP) salmonid monitoring locations and associated tabular population data are part of an ongoing effort to summarize existing and past salmonid monitoring efforts in the areas identified by Adams et al. 2011. These data are compiled and maintained by CDFW with the cooperation of monitoring practitioners. Updates and associated outreach are intended to occur on an annual basis. Data were created using different spatial scales depending on the source. In some cases, GPS coordinates for specific monitoring sites were provided by practitioners or available in annual monitoring reports. In other cases, locations for specific monitoring sites were digitized from maps of monitoring locations provided in annual monitoring reports. Centroids for location areas, such as sub-basins, watershed areas, and regions, were calculated using GIS software. The data user should recognize that errors may have occurred during transcription from external data sources to this dataset, changes may have occurred to the external dataset post transfer, and for other possible reasons. The population metrics summarized in the associated tabular data may be regarded as spatially limited, temporally limited, and not considered a complete estimate for the population being described. The data user is advised to refer to the annual reports cited in the Source field from the tabular data for additional details regarding monitoring at that location.
Abbreviation Definitions : SGS = Spawning Ground Survey, RM = River Mile, RST = Rotary Screw Trap, RKM = River Kilometer, FCS = Fixed Count Station, STH = Steelhead, CC = Coastal Chinook, DS = Downstream
California Department of Fish and Wildlife staff manage and compile data into this dataset. The dataset is composed of information collected and supplied by multiple agencies and organizations, and this summary would not be possible without those efforts. More information about each monitoring location and associated population metrics collected at each site exists in the linked tabular salmonid population data file (see the "Source" field for more information about the associated monitoring reports).
Access Constraints : CDFW only, do not make public . Providing location-specific data for monitoring locations to the public may be problematic because some monitoring equipment is very expensive and prone to theft and/or vandalism.
