The project leads for the collection of this data were Henry Lomeli, Rick Wittsell (of Chico State University), and Julie Garcia. This dataset includes GPS location data from ATS store-on-board GPS collars (models G2110D and G2000S) placed on 22 adult female mule deer. Deer were collared in Butte County as well as Tehama, Yuba, and Plumas counties. The data were collected from 2010-2016.
This dataset was collected to identify any deer that used Butte County, specifically Eastern Butte County, at all during migrations- some summered in Butte County and wintered in other counties, others just briefly passed through Butte County, etc. This study was more of an exploratory project to see how important Butte County was to deer migration. This study was in collaboration with Region 1 as some of the data collected in this project were a part of the East Tehama deer herd. At the time this project started, Butte County board of supervisors were interested in removing quite a bit of landscape that was considered part of critical winter range for deer in this area. This removal would have allowed it to be subdivided into 20-acre parcels. The county believed that migratory deer didnt use the lower elevation areas and that they were only in the upper reaches of the range. This data showed that was not the case and that some animals did go all the way down to the valley floor and wintered there. This was enough to cease any plans to remove the landscape that was part of critical winter range. Since the goal of this project was to gain insight on the general distribution of these deer, they extended the collar life by reducing the fix rate. Its important to note that the due to the low fix rate and small sample size, the data points collected from this project are not an accurate representation of the distribution and corridors of all deer in this area.
