California mule deer, Odocoileus hemionus, migration, telemetry, Region 2, Northeast Sierra, El Doraro, Alpine Mono, California, Douglas, Nevada
The project lead for the collection of this data was Terri Weist (now retired). She, along with Danielle Walsh, Shelly Blair, and other personnel, captured 27 adult female mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) from July 2012 to November 2014, equipping the deer with Iridium satellite collars manufactured by Lotek. GPS location data of the deer was collected with these collars. These deer are from the Carson River herd, which is an interstate population of mule deer, where a portion of the population spends the summer months in the Sierra range of California and the winter months in western Nevada. Other data was collected along with this data, such as sex, age, body condition, neck circumference, and estimated body weight, but was not sent to HQ because it was not relevant to mapping and was formatted for use in ArcMap.
This dataset was created to update our understanding of the Carson River deer herds distribution and migration patterns, cause-specific mortality, migration corridors, seasonal habitat use and selection, and estimates of home range size of female mule deer in California and Nevada. This data was also collected to potentially update the criteria on the issuing of hunting licenses in this herds boundary.
Fix Rate: GPS fixes were collected 2-3 times daily and 5 or more times daily during migration to determine seasonal home ranges and migratory corridors.
