This dataset was created by the Environmental Defense Center (EDC) in order to inform Santa Barbara Countys planned update to the Countys map of Environmentally Sensitive Habitats (ESH) in the EGVCP which was adopted by the County Board of Supervisors in October 2015. The data includes observations of specialstatus plant and animal species (e.g., State and Federally-listed, State Fully Protected, State Species of Concern, Federal Species of Concern, CNPS-list plant species, locally rare and local endemics) which the County uses as one criteria for ESH designation. Data for each observation includes the observer, location, species name and date of observation.
The dataset was created to document existing observations of special-status plant and animal species in the mountainous portion of the EGVCP Area. The dataset is intended to assist the Santa Barbara County Planning and Development Department with properly identifying ESH areas as a follow-up action to the Countys adoption of the EGVCP. The goal we set out to accomplish by creating this dataset is to make sure that chaparral - which is not considered ESH by Santa Barbara County unless it supports one or more rare species or vegetation alliances is protected pursuant to the Countys ESH Ordinance which generally requires a permit for ESH removals over 5,000 sq. ft.
