To help evaluate mining and mineral rights on CDFW Lands. This dataset is also intended to provide information on the location of lands owned and/or administered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and for general conservation planning within the state. The CDFW Lands Inventory database, a separate table related to the dataset, may be queried to generate geographic subsets of properties (e.g., by county, CDFW Region), or subsets based on type of acquisition (fee title, conservation easement, etc.), cost, and, purpose of acquisition (riparian habitat, wetlands, listed species protection, etc.). This dataset is not intended for navigational use. Users should contact the CDFW, Wildlife Branch, Lands Program or CDFW Regional offices for access information to a particular property. These datasets do not provide legal determination of parcel acreages or boundaries. Legal parcel acreages are based on County Assessor records. Conservation easements are not to be released or redistributed to the public or other entities. Users should contact the Wildlife Branch, Lands Program for this information and related data.
The Department has a policy and procedural guideline for managing risk of mining on conservation lands, bulletin 2015-04. The policy can be accessed on the Lands intranet page.
The dataset was created to help guide regional staff in assessing mining risk of mineral exploration and development on Department s fee titled lands, conservation easement property, and future land acquisitions.
The following dataset were used:
Department of General Services (DGS)
Statewide Property Inventory, September 2015
Contact: Gina Linden
California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW)
Lands Inventory Database, Decemeber 2022
CDFW Lands, December 2022
Contact: Sharon Taylor; Lisa Ohara (GIS)
CDFW Lands boundary was processed using the dissolve tool to have one parcel history record for each property. Mineral rights status was dervived from Gina Linden of DGS and the CDFW's Lands Inventory Database.
For potential mineral resource areas, please visit California Geological Surveys (CGS) Mineral Land Classification (MLC) map viewer to view reports and maps. For the latest update, visit the webpage for the latest report. The Surface Mining and Reclamation Act of 1975 (SMARA) is aimed at preserving and protecting mineral resources compatible with mining. Primary products are mineral land classification maps and reports. The SMARA process has two phases: Classification by CGS and designation by SMARA Board.
CGS determines the study area, establishes what kind of resources available in the study area, classifies Mineral Resources Zones, and identifies possible Sectors (defined areas known to contain significant mineral resources). The SMARA Board formally designates the Sectors identified by CGS after it consults with lead agencies and other interested parties (mining industry and general public). Once it is approved, the legal Sectors are designated and protected by law for mining use.

This dataset is not a surveyed product and is not a legal record of original survey measurements. They are representations or reproductions of information using various sources, scales, and precision of boundary data. As such, the data does not carry legal authority to determine a boundary, the location of fixed works nor is it suitable for navigational purposes. Users are responsible for ensuring the appropriate use of the data. It is strongly recommended that users acquire this dataset directly from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and not indirectly through other sources which may have outdated or misinterpreted information.
When labeling or displaying properties on any map, use the provided field named "MAPLABEL" or use a generic label such as "conservation lands", "restricted lands", or some other similiar generalized label.
All conservation easements are closed to public access.
