This dataset provides all animal records from the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) Online Field Survey Form application. These data are only accessible by California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) staff. This layer differs from ds1002 (Unprocessed data from CNDDB Online Field Survey Form) in that it contains all submitted animal data records (including mapped and rejected records, and records for suppressed elements) and nearly all fields (66 versus 20).
In October 2014, the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) program began accepting data through our Online Field Survey Form, an internet application allowing users to submit mapped detections directly to CNDDB to be captured in a spatial database. In an effort to more efficiently map animal observations, and to encourage increased submission of records through the Online Field Survey Form, we are providing increased access to all animal submissions from the Online Field Survey Form for CDFW staff.
These records have received varying levels of review by CNDDB staff. The Processed_Status_Code field will indicate which records are flagged as mapped (M), rejected (R), unprocessed (U), pending (P), or negative data (Z). See field definitions for further details. This dataset also includes submissions which have been transcribed by CNDDB staff into the Online Field Survey Form to allow for digital management of these observations. This complete dataset includes not only information on special status species and record treatment by CNDDB, but also personal information regarding data contributors. Because of the various sensitivity and caveats of the data, this dataset is only available to CDFW staff.
Mapping of animal observation data for conservation and resource management presents unique data challenges and can lead to a lag time before data submitted to our program is reviewed and made available through RareFind and our GIS layer. Some rare animals may be locally conspicuous and readily observed, leading to numerous observations. In other cases, it may be necessary to distinguish rare observations of breeding sites from more common observations. The CNDDB program is currently exploring ways that data from the Online Field Survey Form can help us more efficiently map animals, as well as provide increased access to animal data submitted to our program while it is undergoing review.
