Summary

This dataset represents the California freshwater sport fishing districts and their waters affected by the California trout and salmon district general freshwater sport fishing regulations. It was developed for use in a Department of Fish and Wildlife Internet map application, as well as for analysis and cartographic purposes.

Description

This dataset represents the seven (7) California freshwater sport fishing districts and the waters within each affected by the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 7.00 - District General Sport Fishing Regulations (for trout and salmon).

This dataset supplements the California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations booklet. Users of this dataset should always refer to the information in the most recent edition of the freshwater sport fishing regulations booklet published by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). An Adobe PDF version of the freshwater sport fishing regulations booklet is available online at www.wildlife.ca.gov/regulations. Questions regarding any of the freshwater sport fishing regulations may be referred to the Department of Fish and Wildlife regional offices. CDFW Regional office locations and contact information are available online at www.wildlife.ca.gov/regions.

NOTE: The Appropriate Scale Range for this dataset is 1:5,000,000 to 1:5,000. ArcGIS 10.2.x Metadata Editor Scale Range Bug: A bug has been reported and logged (Esri Reference #NIM104046; Aug-2014) regarding the metadata scale range tool. Regardless of the geodatabase and/or feature class in which the metadata is edited, when the scale range in the "Item Description" section is set to 1:5,000,000 (state level; either maximum or minimum) with the slider bar tool and the metadata is saved, the scale in the "Scale Range" section of the metadata viewer/document shows 1:625,000 instead of 1:5,000,000. All other scale levels are unaffected. This bug is not an issue with ArcGIS 10.1.x or earlier version of Metadata Editor.

Description
The polygons used in this dataset were derived from the CDFW "dfg_fishing_districts" dataset; the NOAA Fisheries Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESU) and Distinct Population Segments (DPS) datasets for West Coast salmon and steelhead species; the cnty24k09_1_poly and cnty24k09_1_line California county boundary datasets; and the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics California road networks dataset. Polygons from the above datasets were split, combined and/or merged, then assembled and configured into the ones used to represent the effected regulated areas described in each respective district general fishing regulation subsection. "FEAT_ID", "TBL_IDX", and "REG_NUMBER" fields were added to the polygon attribute table. The finished spatial feature dataset was joined with the separate trout-salmon fishing regulation master table to obtain the regulation language associated with each feature. The joined datasets were exported to its own feature class and any duplicate fields were removed. The "T14_SECT" field in the attribute table was replaced with a "REG_TITLE" field and the fields "T14_SECT", "T14_SUBSECT" and "SUBSECT_NAME" were removed since the data within fields are combined and contained in the "REG_NUMBER" field. The result was this feature class version (ds953).
Rationale
The original intent for this type of dataset format was to slightly simplify the attribute table which may be more suitable for an online map/data viewer such as CDFW's BIOS.
