Summary

This dataset represents the inland waters affected by the California trout and salmon special freshwater sport fishing regulations general provisions. It was developed to be used in Department of Fish and Wildlife online mapping applications, for regulation analysis, and for cartographic purposes.

Description

This dataset represents those streams within California affected by Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), section 7.50(b) - Waters with Special Fishing Regulations (for trout and salmon). This dataset also contains spatial features and records which represent those waters listed in the supplemental special fishing regulations affected by section 7.50(b)(91.1) - Anadromous Water of the Klamath River downstream of Iron Gate Dam.

This dataset supplements the California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations booklet. Users of this dataset should always refer to the information in the most recent edition of the freshwater sport fishing regulations booklet published by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). An Adobe PDF version of the freshwater sport fishing regulations booklet is available online at www.wildlife.ca.gov/regulations. Questions regarding any of the freshwater sport fishing regulations may be referred to the Department of Fish and Wildlife regional offices. CDFW Regional office locations and contact information are available online at www.wildlife.ca.gov/regions.

NOTE: The Appropriate Scale Range for this dataset is 1:5,000,000 to 1:5,000. ArcGIS 10.2.x Metadata Editor Scale Range Bug: A bug has been reported and logged (Esri Reference #NIM104046; Aug-2014) regarding the metadata scale range tool. Regardless of the geodatabase and/or feature class in which the metadata is edited, when the scale range in the "Item Description" section is set to 1:5,000,000 (state level; either maximum or minimum) with the slider bar tool and the metadata is saved, the scale in the "Scale Range" section of the metadata viewer/document shows 1:625,000 instead of 1:5,000,000. All other scale levels are unaffected. This bug is not an issue with ArcGIS 10.1.x or earlier version of Metadata Editor.

This dataset was derived from the CDFW CA_Streams dataset.

Description
The original line features used for the Ver01 dataset were derived from the "CA_Streams" layer, which is a CDFW routed version of the USGS 1:24,000 National Hydrographic Dataset (NHD) flowline dataset. Each stream line was split and/or trimmed to match its respective stream reach description in the California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations booklet. "CLOSURE", "FEAT_ID", "TBL_IDX", and "REG_NUMBER" fields were added to the line features attribute table. "FEAT_ID", "TBL_IDX", and "REG_NUMBER" values were assigned relative to the corresponding "TBL_IDX" records in the fishing regulations geodatabase table to which the spatial features are joined to obtain the regulation language associated with each feature. The joined datasets were exported to its own feature class and any duplicate fields were removed which resulted in the Ver02 feature class. The "T14_SECT" field in the attribute table was replaced with a "REG_TITLE" field and the fields "T14_SECT", "T14_SUBSECT" and "SUBSECT_NAME" were removed since the data within fields are combined and contained in the "REG_NUMBER" field. The result was this feature class version (ds952).
Rationale
The original intent for this type of dataset format was to slightly simplify the attribute table which may be more suitable for an online map/data viewer such as CDFW's BIOS.
