These points represent a subset of vegetation surveys collected together to support efforts by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) to document and prioritize preservation of Natural Communities in a large area of the Mojave Desert and environs as part of the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP). A large area within the DRECP boundaries was mapped at a fine scale for this effort. But in the coarse-scale and unmapped areas, CDFW has to rely on vegetation surveys to show where stands of different vegetation types have been found within the region. We can also use that data to represent stands that were not mappable because of either the size or signature of the stand being inadequate to delineate. This dataset can be used to determine avoidance and mitigation areas for rare or important vegetation communities. This subset has been created with that purpose in mind as it was created by selecting rare and important vegetation types and removing those that were already represented by polygons.
This dataset combines vegetation surveys (which can be releves, rapid assessments, accuracy assessment surveys, or transects) with field observations of vegetation types. Two main overarching projects are the main sources for the points: 1. The Mojave Desert Ecosystem Program's (MDEP) Central Mojave Vegetation Database. 2. Recent vegetation classification work done by CNPS for the National Park Service as part of their vegetation characterization efforts in the Mojave National Preserve and Death Valley National Park. Both of these efforts leaned on surveys done by a number of people/agencies with some overlap. The survey source is listed in the attributes of the dataset. Most points are associated with vegetation identified down to the alliance or association level. The vegetation observations (reconnaissance) taken in association with the MDEP effort did not have enough detail to be used in classification, and so couldn't be included in CNPS' efforts. This subset was created by selecting records of vegetation with a state rarity rank of S1, S2, or S3; and records that were in Wetland, Riparian, and Dune general natural communities. These were then checked against mapped polygons and all points that were within a stand mapped to the same community were removed.
