Data were collected as part of a greater survey effort on behalf of a private energy company seeking to build a solar power plant in a section of desert. Fall 2012 rare plant surveys were conducted and any sensitive species were recorded. The following data comprise every State and CRPR listed plant species found on the survey site.
These data are the results of fall 2012 rare plant surveys at a proposed solar site, located primarily in the Roosevelt Mine and Thumb Peak quadrangles. The site is located east of the Mule Mountains, west of the towns of Ripley and Palo Verde, and south of the I-10. Three special-status species were detected: Proboscidea althaeifolia, Funastrum utahense, and Chamaesyce abramsiana. Surveys were conducted in September during and after summer rains by qualified botanists. A grid system was utilized and botanists walked parallel transects, 30 meters apart, providing 100% coverage of the site. 113 Funastrum utahense plants, 4,255 Proboscidea althaeifolia plants, and 2,102 Chamaesyce abramsiana plants were observed onsite. Proboscidea was observed in a wide range of maturity, from very small plants with a couple of leaves to senescing plants with fruits; this suggests that additional plants could appear after this survey was complete. Limitations include the following: 1. The numbers of these herbaceous species vary between years, and these totals and precise locations are only one years results. 2. The Chamaesyce abramsiana plant totals in some of the large, concentrated groups of plants were estimated instead of counting each individual. 3. For Funastrum utahense, it proved difficult to determine the precise number of individuals in a cluster.
