marbled murrelet, detections
The purpose of this dataset is to record Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) detections within the Bay Delta Region. This dataset is meant to complement the Marbled Murrelet Habitat Assessments - Bay Delta Region [ds725] dataset.
The Marbled Murrelet Detections Bay Delta Region [ds726] dataset is a compilation of point data displaying occupied and presence behavior detections made during surveys in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Bay Delta Region. This dataset is generated from consultations conducted by the CDFW Timberland Conservation Program, surveys conducted for the CDFW Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR), surveys conducted for timber companies, as well as survey reports by public and private entities. The dataset is intended to serve as background information and assist in project review and conservation planning.
The current standard marbled murrelet survey protocol was developed by the Pacific Seabird Group in 2003. Surveys displayed in this dataset may precede this protocol and follow similar methods. The occupied and presence behavior is defined in the protocol as follows:
Occupied Site where marbled murrelets have been observed exhibiting below-canopy behaviors (i.e. landing, fly below, thru, into, or out of the forest canopy within or adjacent to suitable habitat). Once a site has been determined to be occupied by murrelets, it is considered occupied indefinitely (Marbled Murrelet Survey Protocol Guidelines).
Presence - Site where at least one marbled murrelet detection was made above the forest canopy (i.e. hearing one or more birds, circling or flying above canopy). No breeding or occupied behavior observed. (Marbled Murrelet Survey Protocol Guidelines).
The protocol is: Evans Mack, D., William P. Ritchie, S. Kim Nelson, Elena Kuo-Harrison, Peter Harrison, and Thomas E. Hamer. 2003 [Evans Mack et. al. 2003]. Methods for surveying marbled murrelets in forests, a revised protocol for land management and research. Marbled Murrelet Technical Committee, Pacific Seabird Group, 89 pp. Pacific Seabird Group unpublished document available at http://www.pacificseabirdgroup.org . The protocol was endorsed by CDFW on April 3, 2003 with a supplementary guidance document, titled Marbled murrelet survey protocol guidelines, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, to be used in conjunction with the Pacific Seabird Group Survey Protocol (2003). Collectively, these documents are referred to herein as Marbled Murrelet Survey Protocol Guidelines.
The marbled murrelet is a small seabird which, in California, uses coastal coniferous forests from Del Norte to Santa Cruz counties during the breeding season (March 24 to September 15). Marbled murrelets have been documented nesting in mature, old-growth forests as well as younger forest stands with late-seral elements such as large trees with moss-covered limbs less than 6 inches wide or limb defects (McShane et al. 2004). Mature conifer stands often have a complex tree crown structure with gaps in the canopy which allow access by adult murrelets to and from nest platforms during parental incubation exchanges and chick feeding (Ralph et al. 1995).
The marbled murrelet is listed as state endangered pursuant to Fish and Game Code 2050 et seq ., federally threatened pursuant to Title 16, United States Code 1531 et seq. , and is a sensitive species as defined by Title 14, California Code of Regulations (14 CCR) 895.1. Marbled murrelet consultations for Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) are required pursuant to 14 CCR 919.11 where there is evidence of an active marbled murrelet nest site in or adjacent to the project site, or where the project has the potential to impact the marbled murrelet.
This dataset was originally developed by Richard Fitzgerald and Brenda Blinn and is currently managed by Robynn Swan.
