marbled murrelet, brachyramphus marmoratus
The purpose of this dataset is to present the findings of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) habitat assessments within the San Francisco Bay Delta Region.
The Marbled Murrelet Habitat Assessments - Bay Delta Region dataset [ds 725] is a compilation of marbled murrelet habitat suitability in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Bay Delta Region. This dataset is generated from consultations and field habitat assessments conducted by CDFW Timberland Conservation Program staff as well as survey reports submitted to CDFW by private entities. The majority of this data is for habitat assessed on private timberlands with some habitat delineated on adjacent public land. The dataset is intended to serve as background information and assist in project review and conservation planning.
The marbled murrelet is a small seabird which, in California, uses coastal coniferous forests from Del Norte to Santa Cruz counties during the breeding season (March 24 to September 15). Marbled murrelets have been documented nesting in mature, old-growth forests as well as younger forest stands with late-seral elements such as large trees with moss-covered limbs less than 6 inches wide or limb defects (McShane et al. 2004). Mature conifer stands often have a complex tree crown structure with gaps in the canopy which allow access by adult murrelets to and from nest platforms during parental incubation exchanges and chick feeding (Ralph et al. 1995).
The marbled murrelet is listed as state endangered pursuant to Fish and Game Code 2050 et seq ., federally threatened pursuant to Title 16, United States Code 1531 et seq. , and is a sensitive species as defined by Title 14, California Code of Regulations (14 CCR) 895.1. Marbled murrelet consultations for Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) are required pursuant to 14 CCR 919.11 where there is evidence of an active marbled murrelet nest site in or adjacent to the project site, or where the project has the potential to impact the marbled murrelet.
The marbled murrelet habitat assessments were conducted by staff in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Timberland Conservation Program. This dataset was originally developed by Richard Fitzgerald and Brenda Blinn and is currently managed by Robynn Swan.

The dataset is made available to California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE), United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and other state and federal government agencies. The data are a record of habitat evaluations performed on private lands by CDFW staff during review of timber harvest plans. The dataset is not a comprehensive record of marbled murrelet occurrences in the San Francisco Bay Area and should not be used to predict or evaluate species presence/absence.
