These data were collected for use in the Natural Environment Study of the State Route 76 Melrose to South Mission, Highway Improvement Project, California Department of Transportation, September 2007.
This dataset contains vegetation/habitat type data in the vicinty of the San Luis Rey River between Melrose Drive and South Mission Road along State Route 76 in San Diego County. Data were collected for the State Route 76 Melrose to South Mission Highway Improvement Project for the California Department of Transportation. Vegetation mapping of the area was done in 2002 and updated in 2003. Ground verification field surveys were conducted in August 2006 in order to note any changes to the previously mapped habitat types and to document the current existing biological conditions. The entire portion of the biological study area (BSA) was surveyed by vehicle or on foot. Vegetation types were delineated onto a color aerial photograph of the BSA and then digitized. Vegetation types were classified according to the Holland (1986) and Oberbauer (1996) classification systems, and further defined where necessary. Field survey limitations: 2002 and 2003 were dry years and most likely affected the detectability of other species directly dependent on rainfall or streamflow. Not all private property owners granted permission to enter; in those areas habitat was mapped to the extent possible but not assessed on foot.
