Summary

The purpose of this dataset is to enable DFG scientists to easily screen Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) and other CEQA projects for potentially suitable and known occupied marbled murrelet habitat. The data may also be useful for other purposes.

Description

The Marbled Murrelet Habitat data layer was created by the California Department of Fish and Game to represent occupied and potentially suitable marbled murrelet habitat on the north coast of California (Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino counties). This dataset was compiled from several sources, including public agencies, private timberland data, and publicly available vegetation data. The dataset includes known or assumed occupied habitat, and potentially suitable habitat. Habitat polygons labeled "Occupied" in "MAMU_stat" field have had "occupancy"-type detections during surveys for marbled murrelets in the past. Polygons for which the occupancy status is unknown (labeled "unknown" in "MAMU_stat" field) are considered potentially suitable habitat. Potentially suitable habitat may be both suitable and occupied by nesting marbled murrelets, or may lack some of the features required for marbled murrelet nesting, or, if suitable, may not actually be occupied by nesting marbled murrelets. The data layer was originally meant to cover only Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, and an exhaustive search for Mendocino County data was not done; however, some Mendocino County data are represented. Lack of data in any particular location does not mean that no habitat exists in that location. This dataset should not be used as a definitive source; further investigation of other data sources and ground-checking is advised. Updates to this data layer are welcome; please contact Scott Osborn (sosborn@dfg.ca.gov) or Linda Miller (lmiller@dfg.ca.gov) if you would like to provide information on other known occupied or suitable marbled murrelet nesting habitat in Humboldt, Del Norte, or Mendocino counties.

Description
USFS data: A shapefile named "rawvegwild_burn_final_nso_1.shp" was obtained from Kary Schlick, wildlife biologist, Six Rivers Forest Supervisor's Office, who said the data were recently updated for Megram fire habitat with regards to MAMU and SPOW habitat (September 2007). We excluded the following records from the data: "BMAMUHAB" = "no"; Series = White fir (02), Canyon Live Oak (17), White Oak (12), Gray Pine (20), Ponderosa Pine (07), Knobcone Pine (21), Blue Oak (81), Sargeant Cypress (82), Interior Live Oak (83); and polygons within Zone 2 (boundary of Zone 1-2 was digitized from the Marbled Murrelet Habitat Suitability - Ecological Niche Factor Analysis data, for Southern Oregon to California. See http://www.reo.gov/monitoring/reports/10yr-report/map-data/index.shtml) . This layer was edited in some instances where polygons overlapped with data from the BLM layer, since the BLM data originated from the USFS data, and was clipped to BLM ownership boundaries. However, the BLM and USFS determined marbled murrelet habitat differently. Consequently, for this MAMU habitat data, the BLM data layer was erased from the USFS data layer. USFS habitat data was apparently determined more liberally, and as a result, MAMU habitat within BLM owned lands sometimes includes polygons obtained both from BLM and from USFS. After the merge process, sliver polygons were deleted, and all polygons less than 400 sq. m. were reviewed, and either deleted (if very narrow, or if they appeared to be artifacts of the merge), or merged with BLM data.

Process step
Description
Pacific Lumber Company marbled murrelet data: Scanned, rectified, and digitized polygons representing Category C, D, & E marbled murrelet habitat from maps (dated 2000) provided by Pacific Lumber Company. In March 2008, current THP boundary data were downloaded from CalFire (ftp.fire.ca.gov), and were used to erase areas of C, D, and E stands that had been harvested (THP polygons attributed with silviculture = "OUT" or "No Harvest" were first removed, then THPs that were completed after 1999 (or status was "approved" or "pending") were used). Stands where harvest was completed prior to 2000 were assumed to be omitted from original Palco map, which was dated 2000. Stands less than 100 sq. m. or any polygon less than 20 meters wide were deleted from the data. Remaining stand polygons less than 500 sq. m. were then individually checked, compared with 2005 NAIP imagery and THP layer, and any polygons that appeared to be artifacts of the erase process and/or other GIS artifacts, were removed. The remaining polygons were added to the MAMU habitat layer.

BLM data: A regions coverage named "vegparra_all" was obtained from BLM's Paul Fritze (Arcata Field Office). "Prime" region represented mid-mature, mid-mature with predoms, late mature, and old-growth "natural" stands seral stages. "Second" regions represented only the "Old Harvest" seral stage to represent residual habitat. These two regions were exported to shapefile and merged, and the following records were excluded: "Seral" = Mid-Mature where size class < 4; "Series" = White fir (02), or Canyon Live Oak (17), or White Oak (12), or Gray Pine (20), or Ponderosa Pine (07), or Knobcone Pine (21), or Blue Oak (81), or Sargeant Cypress (82), or Interior Live Oak (83); all polygons within Zone 2 (boundary of Zone 1-2 was digitized from the Marbled Murrelet Habitat Suitability - Ecological Niche Factor Analysis data, for Southern Oregon to California.
