The primary purpose of this dataset is for use in developing a species conservation and monitoring plan for small, terrestrial mammals in the areas of San Diego, California which burned during the Cedar and Otay fires of 2003.
Trapping, using Sherman live traps, for small, terrestrial mammals in San Diego County was conducted by the USGS as part of a post fire monitoring project. The dataset contains spatial and temporal information on animal captures. Dataset includes capture records from February 2005 to November 2006. Accuracy of individual data fields have been reviewed and data collection efforts are ongoing. METHODS Drift Fence Array with Small Mammal Traps Design: The array design consists of three 15-meter arms of drift fence with 9 medium and 9 large Sherman live traps per array. The angle formed by the array arms around the center point can vary but should be approximately 120 degrees. The Sherman traps are split into 9 pairs, each with one large and one medium trap. Three pairs of traps are set up near the center of the array, one pair in each of the 120 degree corners created by the drift fences. A pair is also placed along each arm of the drift fences. The last three pairs are placed at a 15 meter radius from the center of the drift fence array, roughly centered in the middle of each of the 120 degree regions created by the arms of the drift fence. Survey Methods: In our protocol, small mammals traps at any given study site are sampled for 3 consecutive days and then removed from the field (i.e., opened on Monday, sampled daily Tuesday through Thrusday, closed Thursday). This is referred to as a sample period. Four sample periods are scheduled per year, two in the spring and two in the fall.

No warranty of any kind, implied, expressed, or statutory, including but not limited to the warranties of non-infringement of third party rights, title, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and freedom from computer virus, is given with respect to these data.
Use restricted to government agencies. Positional accuracy of individual locations is limited by: accuracy of satellite GPS locations, observer error, and possible data entry errors. Although, all reasonable attempts have been made to limit these factors, positional accuracy for any individual point should not necessarily be considered minimal. The appropriateness of multiple scales of inference, is the end-users responsibility to justify and the originators assume no responsibility for incorrect or misleading uses of this data
