Summary

The purpose of this dataset is to provide a spatial representation of the database in its current state and to solicit information, updated data, and input on what is desirable for future content and structure.

Description

This dataset is a work in progress containing limited information pertaining to minimum stream flow requirements (base flows) for several jurisdictional and non-jurisdictional dams located in California. The data were collected by Dick Neal of DWR in 2004, but it is incomplete has not been checked by DFG for accuracy. The goal of this project is to develop a statewide database of all streams with facilities that require base flow agreements. Potential contributors and end-users are encouraged to provide input during the database development and data collection phases to ensure the database will serve the information requirements for a relatively wide audience. Once completed, the database may be made publicly available via the CalFish website (www.calfish.org).

Nonspatial data for each dam were obtained from a spreadsheet originating from the California Department of Water Resources (see References). Additional work on this dataset was completed by Ron Rogers, a retired DFG BIOS/CalFish Environmental Scientist, and by Jeanine Phillips who is now with the DFG Fisheries Branch. Geographic coordinates were determined by layering the Passage Assesment Database (PAD) (www.calfish.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabId=69) and Jurisdictional Dams Database (www.calfish.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabId=64#any_URL) layers over USGS 1:24,000 quad maps within the CalFish IMAPS viewer (www.calfish.org). Abbreviations and several types of special characters were removed from many attribute table fields. Changes were made to tabular data (river, river basin, reservoir name, dam name and owner fields) when they did not agree with data contained within the 1:100,000 routed hydrography, Jurisdictional Dams and PAD layers in CalFish. Original metadata are not available for the tabular data. Base flow data were not verified and may not be current. In addition, several records do not contain base flow data.
