Summary

This data set displays information on observation locations for owls in California to help understand the species' distribution, movements, and trends. The information also can be used for research, planning, and management for this species.

Description

This data set contains basic observation information on 12 of the 13 owl species found in California and is provided by the A vian Knowledge Network (AKN) . The species included are: Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Barred Owl (Strix varia) Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) Flammulated Owl (Otus flammeolus) Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) Northern Pygmy-Owl (Glacidium gnoma) Northern Saw-whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis) Western Screech-Owl (Otus kennicottii) AKN is a joint venture including sponsors National Biological Information Infrastructure and National Science Foundation, and collaborators Cornell Lab of Ornithology, PRBO Conservations Science, Redwood Sciences Laboratory, Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, and Bird Studies Canada. AKN collects, organizes, archives, and distributes avian data for various analytical purposes. This large (almost 20,000,000 observations to date) and comprehensive database provides a unified structure where data from multiple sources can be used together to produce more meaningful products. AKN also has developed applications to visualize temporal and spatial patterns of bird movements and numbers. These bird observations were made by professional birding consultants, ornithologists, researchers and knowledgeable volunteers over the last few years. Most of their observations came from point counts from job sites, back yards, or from sites established to assess bird populations in specific locations or habitats throughout California. Protocols for the three programs that produce the most observations are on the web at: https://www.birdcount.org/ . The dataset is limited in that the there is no observer provided for each record, the location is only accurate to a circular area equivalent to about one-sixteenth of a square mile, and a number of fields have only code values and the code definitions are not known.

Data Quality

Scope of quality information
Resource level dataset

Data quality report - Conceptual consistency
Measure description
Locations where these owls are observed may not represent sites with continuous presence of the same animal(s) or species of animal. Other sites where these owls exists may not be listed in observation reports in this dataset.

Data quality report - Completeness omission
Measure description
Some observations have some have partial data in the TimeCollec, DuratInHrs, NumObservs, ProjCode, ProtoCode, SurvAreaId, County, Locality, and CoordUncer fields. However all records had an entry in the DateCollec, ObsCount, Latitude, and Longitude fields. These data do not reflect a statewide sampling. Therefore, not all sites where this species is found are represented in this data set.

Data quality report - Quantitative attribute accuracy
Measure description
It is assumed that observers can identify all owls observed in this data set, and that each is knowledgeable regarding the habitats and general locations occupied by these species. This may not be true with this data set, especially for the less abundant species (i.e., Barred Owl and Great Gray Owl) where the majority of observations were not where they would be expected to be. Some of the TimeCollec entries were input with a different time format, 00:00:00:AM. This would indicate a time (midnight) that one might expect owls to be observed. However, many of these were consistently from sources where midnight time had been entered into a number of sequential records. It is quite possible that the midnight time for many records here should have been a null value. Likewise, many but not all "0" values in the DuraInHrs field should be null values, and all of the "0" values in the NumObservs field should be null values or there was no one there to make the observation.

Data quality report - Absolute external positional accuracy
Dimension horizontal

Measure description
There is no datum given and it is assumed that both NAD27 and NAD83 data are present. Therefore the actual site may be anywhere within a 300 meter (~0.2 mile) radius of the point location. The actual methods, reference, or device for determining the point's location are unknown, but given the wide array of observers they may come from an equally wide variety of sources, be measured or estimated, and vary in accuracy from meters to a mile or more.
