The purpose was to collect inland fisheries data on streams in the American Basin to use in resource assessments of natural communities in the Sierra Nevada foothill region. DATA ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITATIONS Users should assume data collection was performed in an unbiased manner and equal effort was expended at each sampling location allowing the comparison of relative values. KNOWN CAVEATS OF THE DATA Each point represents the approximate location of the beginning of each sampling location, i.e. reach. The placement of points were determined based on verbal descriptions of sampling locations and GPS events recorded during surveys.
This dataset is derived from inland fisheries surveys conducted in the American Basin (Placer County) on streams that drain into the lower Sacramento River. It represents a portion of a larger effort by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), Native and Anadromous Fisheries and Wildlife Branch (NAFWB) Stream Evaluation Program to gather biological information to be used in resource assessments of natural communities in the Sierra Nevada foothill region. The removal method was utilized to estimate population size, relative species abundance, species composition and size structure of native and non-native fishes in Auburn Ravine, Coon Creek, Secret Ravine, Miners Ravine and Dry Creek in the American basin. Multiple-pass electrofishing was conducted in 10 to 12 reaches in each stream during two major sampling events occurring in summer/early fall 2004 and in spring 2005.
WHAT EACH RECORD REPRESENTS Each record represents the survey date, time, location, sampling effort expended for each pass, electrofisher settings and total number of fish species captured during each pass in each reach. There are 149 records for 43 sampling sites.
