Summary

The overall objective of this study is to provide scientific information to the National Park Service so that potential risks from metals in Whiskeytown's major watersheds can be identified and managed appropriately. This will be accomplished by assessing the extent to which metals from mine sites have contaminated the NRAs ecosystem. Specific objectives are: 1. Identify and characterize contaminant "hot spots" within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area based on concentrations of mercury and other metals in water, sediments, and biota and water quality, benthic macroinvertebrate community structure, and stream habitat quality at sites identified as potentially contaminated. 2. Evaluate major bioaccumulation pathways for mercury and other metals of concern in the affected ecosystems. 3. Based on the scientific literature and any observed abnormalities in the biota, evaluate potential adverse effects mercury or other metals may have on biota present in the watershed.

Description

This dataset represents part of an integrated study to determine the degree and extent to which mercury and other metals from active and abandoned mines within and upstream of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (NRA) are present in the upper Clear Creek watershed and the magnitude to which they may have bioaccumulated in fish, amphibians, and invertebrates. Elevated metal concentrations in a water body or its sediments do not necessarily result in excessive accumulations in the biota inhabiting these environments. However, when conditions favor the conversion of such metals to organometallic forms, high concentrations may bioaccumulate in biota causing adverse effects or hazardous conditions for predators. In 2000, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), at the request of the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, began a multi-year study of mercury contamination in the Trinity River watershed, Trinity County, California. The Central Valley Project Improvement Act, along with a recent (June 2000) large-scale tadpole die-off, brought water quality and contamination issues to the forefront of the NRA's concern. Therefore, the National Park Service requested the USGS to expand their on-going research in the Trinity River watershed to include the adjacent Whiskeytown NRA, focusing on contaminant levels in fish, frogs, and invertebrates. A plan to meet this need was completed by Hothem, May, and Gibson (2001). For further explanation of this dataset can be accessed at: http://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.aspx?=DocumentID=17043 . WHAT EACH RECORD REPRESENTS: Each record represents a tissue sample which has been analyzed for the presence and concentration of various metals and trace elements. Tissue samples may be individual or aggregrate; please read all the metadata for additional information.

Supplemental information
METHODS Fish Predatory game fish, including rainbow trout, and, if available, smallmouth or largemouth bass, were targeted for collection. Where these fish were absent, California roach and/or riffle scuplin were collected. Each fish was weighed and measured for standard and total length. In the laboratory, the age of each fish was estimated, and each fish was examined for gross deformities, dissected to determine sex, and the gastrointestinal (GI) tract removed and foods preserved for later identification. Samples from each site were analyzed for metals, including total mercury. Amphibians A maximum of 3 adult amphibians from one species, as available, were collected at each site. The collection priority for amphibians were bullfrogs first, followed by Pacific treefrogs, and foothill yellow-legged frogs as a final option. In the laboratory, each specimen was measured, examined for gross deformities, weighed, aged, and sexed. Digestive tracts were removed and food habits estimated from the contents. Individual frogs were analyzed for metals. Invertebrates The target macroinvertebrates for this study were predatory or filter-feeding insects, depending on their abundance and availability at sampling sites. We collected several families of dragonflies (Order Odonata), predaceous diving beetles (Order Coleopteran: family Dyticidae), water striders (Hemiptera: Gerridae), stoneflies (Plecoptera: Perilidae); and dobsonflies (Megaloptera: Corydalidae). Invertebrates were collected using kick nets, dip nets, and by hand. Sample organisms were placed in zip-lock plastic bags with native water and kept on wet ice in a cooler for sorting at the end of each collection day. Individuals were sorted by family and placed in disposable dishes using Teflon-coated forceps or gloved-hand. Organisms were rinsed clean with deionized water and patted dry with a clean paper towel. Composite samples, consisting of up to 30 individuals of the same family (1-5 g), were weighed and placed into chemically cleaned glass jars with Teflon-lined lids and stored frozen until they could be shipped to the laboratory for analysis. Each composite sample was analyzed for trace elements and metals. REFERENCES: Hothem RL, J May and J Gibson. 2001.
