The purposes of this dataset include conservation planning, habitat monitoring, and cave resource protection. Cave locations, as represented by single points, are approximate and are assumed to have been manually interpolated from USGS 7.5'-series topographic maps.
This dataset is a partial representation of cave locations in California as of 1996. Cave locations are approximate and are represented by points. The points were compiled by the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) program from various sources and dates, mainly from USGS 7.5'-series topographic maps as available through about 1996. Attributes include cave feature name, a land ownership field indicating federal or non-federal land ownership, and latitude / longitude point coordinates.
USGS GNIS data processed and documented by the California Department of Fish and Game GIS Service Center, Sacramento
