Summary

To identify the location of kidding grounds, migration corridors, stress migration corridors, and winter range for pronghorn in northeastern California

Description

This is a Northeast California layer showing pronghorn kidding grounds, migration corridors, stress migration corridors, and winter range. These areas were designated by DFG biologists based upon their personal knowledge of these ranges. The purpose of this dataset is to provide locational information regarding Pronghorn range throughout Northern California. The locations of these features are based on the best-professional judgment of DFG Biologists and have not been rigorously examined by current technical means (e.g., telemetry, GPS radio collars, etc). These data were compiled by DFG Unit Biologists in the 1970s under what was then known as the Areas of Significant Biological Importance (ASBI) project performed by Jones and Stokes (1979). Under this project unit biologists were asked to hand draw natural resource boundaries and other resource features on USGS 7.5' and 15' quadrangle maps. These features were subsequently hand digitized to produce this dataset. There were often inconsistencies in the detail and extent of what was considered to be "significant" by the individual unit biologists. This is most obvious at boundaries between the biologists' units where the features often do not line up. A recent qualitative review of these data by DFG Biologist Bob Schaefer (in 2001) indicated that this dataset was fairly accurate to his personal knowledge. Bob compared the features in this dataset to his personal knowledge of Pronghorn range and corridors and indicated that there was a fairly decent match. Regardless, please use this data with caution. If there are any questions, please consult with a DFG Unit Biologist for the area in question.
