The purpose of the surveys is to establish age and sex ratios for use in determining deer population estimates. This information is used to set deer hunt quotas.
These observations come from helicopter surveys of deer in selected ranges of California. The fall 2001/winter 2002 data were collected in October through January, the spring 2002 were collected in February and March, the fall 2002/winter 2003 were collected in October through January, and the spring 2003 data were collected in March. The data are summarized by survey polygon. Attributes include number of adults (for spring data), bucks & does (for fall/winter data), fawns, and unclassified deer seen, the number and total length of transects flown, and the area of each survey polygon.
