Summary

The purpose of the surveys is to establish age and sex ratios for use in determining deer population estimates. This information is used to set deer hunt quotas.

Description

These observations come from helicopter surveys of deer in selected ranges of California. The fall 2001/winter 2002 data were collected in October through January, the spring 2002 were collected in February and March, the fall 2002/winter 2003 were collected in October through January, and the spring 2003 data were collected in March. The data are summarized by survey polygon. Attributes include number of adults (for spring data), bucks & does (for fall/winter data), fawns, and unclassified deer seen, the number and total length of transects flown, and the area of each survey polygon.

Supplemental information
In California, helicopter deer surveys conducted in cooperation with the Deer Management Program are based on a random transect design. Initial survey polygons are created for use in these surveys in conjunction with local Department of Fish and Game biologists. Each polygon is then overlaid with 500 meter wide transects. A subset of these transects are then randomly selected to be flown. Transects are surveyed either in the fall/winter or the spring depending on the herd requirements. Transects are flown by helicopter containing a pilot and three observers. One observer also serves as data recorder. When deer are spotted within 250 meters of the transect being flown they are classified as to sex and age (bucks, does and fawns in the fall and winter, and adults and fawns in the spring when the bucks have shed their antlers). A waypoint is recorded for the deer group using a GPS, and the rest of the survey information is recorded on hard copy data sheets. All data is delivered to Rick Mayfield of the Department of Fish and Game upon completion of the surveys. The data is then compiled and used to estimate populations and set deer hunt quotas.
