Summary

The dataset was designed to document the number and location of tricolored blackbird colonies observed during a prescribed count period in April. It was intended to contribute to statewide distribution of the species and document the range of potential colony sizes. *****The information in this data should be considered historical. For the most recent data on breeding locations please contact Neil Clipperton - Neil.Clipperton@wildlife.ca.gov.*****

Description

Observations recorded during breeding season surveys for tricolored blackbirds conducted across their range in California primarily during the 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1999 breeding seasons. Records contain observations made either 1) during an organized statewide survey constrained by short survey windows to reduce the possibility of duplicative counting or 2) outside of these prescribed survey windows and therefore not considered for population size estimates or other derived analyses. Observations recorded from April 20 to 26, 1994; April 19 to 25, 1995; April 24 to 30, 1996; April 23 to 29, 1997; April 18 to 24, 1999 (inclusive) should be considered part of the statewide coordinated survey and colony size estimates for observations made during these periods were considered in the overall population estimate for each year (see "Tricolored Blackbird Status Update and Management Guidelines", Beedy and Hamilton 1997, available at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/info/bm_research/bm_pdfrpts/97_07.pdf for additional information). Organized surveys conducted during the time frames described above utilized highly skilled volunteers from natural resource conservation and management agencies, universities and state colleges, and private bird research and conservation organizations. Most large (>10,000) colonies initially detected by a volunteer observer, and for which an initial population estimate was calculated, were visited by a trained and knowledgable Tricolored Blackbird expert to validate the initial estimate. In some cases, research participants conducted post-fledging nest counts to assist in calibrating colony size estimates. The 1994 survey was organized by California Audubon and cosponsored by the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The remaining surveys were organized by the California Department of Fish and Game. The majority of observation from all years are from the central valley and western desert regions. Each record in the database represents a single colony observation by an observer at a given place and time. Record attributes describe the observers assessment of the breeding status of the colony, a colony size estimate, the observers name, and other information.

Supplemental information
Initially using historical locations as a guide, and later utilizing area-based surveys, observers searched these areas for suitable habitat and tricolored blackbird breeding colonies. When colonies were found, observers determined nesting status and colony size or estimated the number of tricolored blackbirds foraging or roosting. Observers were told not to enter or otherwise disturb active colonies, to remain at least 25 meters from nesting activities, and limit the time for counting/estimating numbers to no more than 10-15 minutes. Observers were instructed to round estimates to the nearest 10 for small colonies (about 100 birds), to the nearest 100 for medium sized colonies (about 1,000 birds), and to the nearest 1,000 for large colonies (greater than 10,000 birds). Observers described colony or observation locations either in text form, as marks on maps, or from UTM and latitude/longitude coordinates taken from maps. The Department of Fish and Game transformed the survey sheets to a database and accompanying GIS files for spatial display and analysis. Department staff reviewed geographic coordinates provided by surveyors, assigned UTM - NAD27 coordinates to those locations using USGS quad. maps, and converted the observer-provided geographic coordinates to UTM - NAD27 format. NOTE: although the original data were derived from base maps with NAD 27 datum, the spatial file was later transformed to NAD 83 for compatibility with other data in the BIOS system. GENERAL ASSUMPTIONS OF THE DATA. * Observers can identify tricolored blackbirds and distinguish them from red-winged blackbirds. * Tricolored blackbirds counted in the survey period were only counted once. * Estimated colony sizes are valid in showing size relationships between different breeding colonies. * Observers could detect colonies within mile of a survey route. KNOWN CAVEATS OF THE DATA. * Colony sizes in most cases were estimated and not counted. * The statewide survey failed to document every breeding colony during the survey year and the number of undocumented colonies, and their size, is unknown.
