Summary

Area-constrained surveys were conducted at three point locations (PLOT_NUM) to refine habitat relationships of reptiles and amphibians, and to identify any special status and high-priority species needing more in-depth and long-term monitoring. This data can be used by land managers, consultants, and land owners for research and monitoring.

Description

Area-constrained surveys for reptiles and amphibians in the Sierra Nevada foothills were conducted during the spring of 2004 (March-May) by field crews working for California Department of Fish and Game. The detection locations (including 303 points) occurred in two study areas on public lands in Yuba, Nevada and Tehama Counties.

Supplemental information
METHODS: Area-constrained surveys were conducted at three points (PLOT_NUM) per sample point (SAMPLE_ID). Each survey point was 250 m apart and 7.8 acres (100-m radius) in size. At each survey point, an area-constrained survey was done between 30 March and 15 May 2004. All areas within the 7.8 acres were completely searched while focusing search efforts around key habitat elements where reptiles and amphibians are most likely to be found. Surveys began in the late morning and into the afternoon when species were most active. Each reptile and amphibian detection location was recorded in the field using a GPS. Six observers did the surveys, and they rotated among all points. With 61 sample locations and 3 points at each location, there were 183 individual survey points but reptiles and amphibians were not detected at some points. Data were compiled by research biologist Stacy Hall with the California Department of Fish and Game. Sample points were selected from a random sample of 5% of land polygons for the Sierra foothills. The polygons were generated from a geographic information system (GIS) coverage that was created by intersecting data from four biophysical attributes: precipitation, temperature, slope and aspect, and geologic substrate. From the 5% sample, center points of each polygon (centroid) were drawn by a GIS, and the centroids were chosen for the sample points. The centroids were random ground locations for conducting bird counts and habitat sampling. Then the centroids were visually viewed on digital orthophoto quadrangle images to manually pick those completely within the boundaries of the individual units, and were distributed more or less throughout the entire study area. Equivalent numbers of sample locations were chosen for each study area (31 in Tehama County, 30 in Yuba County) to achieve approximately equal sample sizes and survey effort. At each sample location, three points were plotted in the GIS that were spaced 250 m apart in an equilateral triangle and centered over the centroid.
