Objectives of data set were to spatially and temporally analyze sage-grouse distributions across the landscape. Including but not limited to: seasonal use patterns, migration routes and corridors, residency patterns, habitat selection, and to identify habitats for natural resource management and planning. These telemetry data were gathered from only a few of the members of the population at a single point in time they represent neither the entire range of activities and locations of the individual birds nor do they necessarily represent the entire population. These data are intended for small scale (1:100,000 and smaller) natural resource management and planning applications. The points in this data set are not exact locations, but estimations of 400 meters to 3 meters. This data set is intended as an analytical tool for wildlife and habitat management along with conservation and restoration planning.
This point data set was developed from an observational study of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in Lassen County, California. The study recorded seasonal movements and habitat use of 78 birds between April 1998 and July 2001. Sixty-five females and 12 males (1 bird no data) were equipped with 19-g battery powered telemetry transmitters. Field personnel located the birds with hand-held, 2-element Yagi antenna and a Telonics TR-2 receiver. Telemetry locations were determined from a hand-held GPS receiver. Besides locational data vegetation type and bird activity was recorded. Time period of data: Observations were made from April 1998 until July 2001. Number of records: There are 1548 entity points with attributes included in the data set. Geographic extent of the records: Extent includes eastern Lassen County, CA, and western Washoe County, NV. Records in this data set represent the location of sage-grouse estimated from GPS and observations by field personnel. Attributes include: sex, age, weight, radio transmitter frequency, nesting attempts, lek of capture, date of capture, date of observation, observer, activity, seasonal use, land ownership, seasonal movements, time of capture, and other locational information fields i.e., UTM coordinates.
