WHAT THE DATABASE WAS DESIGNED TO DO Landbird surveys were conducted to establish bird population indices, refine bird-habitat relationships, and to identify any special status and high-priority species needing more in-depth and long-term monitoring. HOW THE DATABASE WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED These data can be used by land managers, consultants, and land owners for research and monitoring.
TIME PERIOD COVERED The data were collected late-March and mid-May 2004 by field crews working for California Department of Fish and Game. NUMBER OF RECORDS There were 183 bird count stations, each surveyed three times. There are 2691 records in this file. GEOGRAPHIC EXTENT OF THE RECORDS Point count locations occurred in two study areas on public lands in Yuba and Tehama Counties in the Sierra Nevada foothills. BASE DATA STRUCTURE The file is a flat Excel table which gives the average number of individuals of each bird species and their detection rates from each sample point. Each point where birds counts were conducted is represented by two fields called "SAMPLE_ID" and "PLOT_NUM" which also relate to habitat data from the same plots in another data table. WHAT EACH RECORD REPRESENTS Each record in the table represents the average number of individuals of a bird species found at the point count location and the species detection rate. Bird counts were done at three plots (count station) per sample point and each plot (count station) was visited three times in 2004 for the bird surveys.
