Reptiles, Western Riverside County, California, coast horned lizard, sagebrush lizard, granite spiny lizard, environment, biota, coastal western whiptail, orange-throated whiptail
These data were collected to create and test landscape-level predictive distribution models for five lizard species in western Riverside County, CA. These data are appropriate for any application requiring geographically-precise presence data for the reptile and amphibian species included. The bulk of the data (>90%) concerns the five target lizard species. Observations were made opportunistically and thus the microhabitats are not meant to be representative of species usage (e.g., we visited rock outcrops specifically searching for S. orcutti).
These data were collected in 2003 and 2004 as calibration and validation point observations for multivariate GIS-based predictive distribution models for five lizard species in western Riverside County, CA (Allen, M.F., 2005). The five target species were: orange-throated whiptail (Cnemidophorus hyperythrus), coastal western whiptail (C. tigris stejnegeri), sagebrush (Sceloporus graciosus vandenburgianus), granite spiny (S. orcutti), and coast horned (Phrynosoma coronatum) (Stebbins 2003). Slightly less than half the data were collected in 2003 as calibration data to help build the models and the remaining data were collected in 2004 as validation data to test and evaluate model output. METHODS: Data from 2003 were collected by: Adam Malisch, Jessica Bunkers, Kenneth Halama, Brandon Mutrux, Patricia Brock, Lester Milroy, and Kathleen Fleming by conducting visual-encounter surveys in areas a priori assumed likely to support target species. Data from 2004 were collected by Adam Malisch and Brandon Mutrux by conducting time-constrained visual-encounter surveys within hexagonal cells with varying degrees of predicted habitat suitability for target species. Incidental observations of non-target reptile and amphibian species were also recorded in 2004. Each record represents a point observation of a reptile or amphibian species and includes the following data: observer name(s), observation date, general site name, species, life stage, location coordinates, microhabitat, and additional notes. The time of each observation was recorded in 2004 but not in 2003. Each record is of a single individual, unless otherwise noted.
