Summary

What the database was designed to do. The database is designed to track, over time, the distribution and numbers of breeding terns, and their breeding success and nesting chronology. How the database is designed to be used. The database is designed to be used by researchers to monitor least tern breeding success and the dynamics in their breeding population size and distribution. It also can serve as a information source to evaluate project impacts.

Description

This is a DRAFT dataset. It is posted here to solicit corrections, edits and comments on both the colony locations and the data. The metadata for this dataset covers both the shapefile and the extended table including the field attributes for both the .dbf of the shapefile and of the .dbf extended table. This dataset displays the location of California least tern breeding colonies and documents the size of those colonies and their breeding success and chronology. The biologica data comes from annual reports produced by survey compiler/ coordinators and has been published by the Department. Seven annual reports documenting the California least tern monitoring over the 13 breeding seasons reported in this data set are available online at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/info/bm_intro.shtml . This is not a complete dataset; the locations of a number of nesting colonies are not displayed here as we do not have a record of the location. Likewise, the locations we do have may be showing locations that are no longer used but we do not have the more current locations. Time period covered. This dataset covers the information provided for the 1988 through 2001 breeding seasons. Number of records. There are 40 nesting colonies sites displayed here. There are 587 records of the annual status of a nesting colony over 13 years (31 to 57 records per year), but many of them will not be displayed because we cannot attach them to a known colony location. Geographic extent of the records. California least tern breeding colonies documented here occur from the very upper part of San Francisco Bay south along the California coast to within 3 miles of the border with Mexico. Currently this data set does not include a location of an inland breeding site in Kings County documented in 1998 and 2000 which is in the database. Base data structure. The dataset consists of a shapefile and a data table; the shapefile displays poloygons representing the known locations of most of the breeding colonies. The data table provides the quantitative information on the tern nesting success and chronology at the breeding colonies. What each record represents. Each data record contains summary information for a colony in a single year. This information includes the number of breeding pairs, number of eggs laid and hatched, number of young fledged, and the chronology of observations and of tern nesting.

Supplemental information
METHODS How data were collected in the field. Data are collected in the field by entering the nesting area and temporarily disturbing the terns to count eggs and band young, by primarily remaining out of the nesting area and checking nests and productivity from a distance, or by a combination of both with more than one entry per month occurring. Nest, pair, and fledgling counts are made or estimated, causes of loss are determined, and the total number of lost individuals is documented. Please see http://www.dfg.ca.gov/hcpb/info/bm_research/bm_pdfrpts/2001_01.pdf for descriptions of the current methods used to estimate breeding pairs. Who collected data in the field. The data were collected each year by numerous paid volunteers who agreed to monitor one or more tern breeding colony. At some colonies and in some years, volunteers might have performed habitat maintenance activities before the breeding season. Most often these volunteers had a number of years experience monitoring breeding tern colonies. Who did the initial data compilation. Each year a compiler was hired to coordinate volunteer efforts and to gather the annual monitoring information together and produce a report. The compilers most often had previous years of experience monitoring more than one colony in a single year and most were compilers for two to five years. Basis for geographic coordinates. The geographic coordinates so far have come from colony locations drawn on old copies of quad maps. However, we do not have this information for all colonies. Also, least tern nesting sites do not stay in a precise location from year to year, and we do not have a complete iteration of all sites used by the terns at a given "site." It is goal of this data set to try to generate a location history of the the tern nesting colonies. General assumptions of the data. * Monitor intrusion, as practiced, is relatively minimal. * There is no difference in the numbers obtained by invasive monitoring and passive monitoring. * There are no known breeding colonies that are not monitored in California. Known caveats of the data. * Nesting colony location changes over time. * Currently, we have only a rough representation of where breeding areas are or have been. * Many historical sites no longer occur or could occur. * We have displayed only 40 nesting colony locations. We do not have a record for the locations of the following colonies: @ San Francisco Bay - PG&E Pittsburg, Port Chicago, Tern Island. @ Inland - Kettleman City. @ San Luis Obispo Co. - Mussel Pt. (Guadalupe Dunes area), San Antonio Cr., Purisima Point, Beach 2 (Vandenberg). @ Ventura Co. - Mugu Lagoon, nesting islands (both at Pt. Mugu). @ Los Angeles Co. - Pier 400 and Pier TC2 (both at Long Beach Harbor), Costa del Sol (1988 observations). @ Orange Co. - Seal Beach, Sunset, Sunset Aquatic, Sunset Beach, Newport Slough. @ San Diego Co. - White Beach (Camp Pendleton), Delta Beach (including North, South, & Ocean), Aqua Hedionda, Mission Bay South Shore (does this include sites called Mission Pt., Flood Control Channel, Freeway [north, east, & west], Mud Flats, Quivera Basin? and which one is where?), and NAB Ocean.
