Commercial fishing reporting blocks for the state of California. This feature [ds3093] and its complementary feature (Offshore Commercial Fishing Blocks (pre Jan 1, 2025) [ds3138] are for reference to California commercial fisheries catch and effort data up to December 31, 2024. For data after this date, please refer to the current feature: Commercial Fishing Blocks - R7 - CDFW [ds3204]. In 1933 the Division of Fish and Game divided the ocean waters of the state into sections, or blocks. Each block is ten minutes of longitude by ten minutes of latitude (roughly ten miles square). This system was carried out to about fifty miles from shore. Beyond this was constructed one row of blocks thirty minutes of longitude and thirty minutes of latitude to take care of any extension of fishing grounds. For more information see: Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. 1935. Fish Bulletin No. 44. The Commercial Fish Catch of California for the Years 1930-1934, Inclusive.
The basic 10 minute grid was created using the ARC/INFO generate fishnet command. The input coordinates were in decimal degrees and the resultant coverage was subsequently projected into Teale Albers. The coastline derived from the 1:100K hydrology was incorporated to the 10 minute grid. The trawl logbook developed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the States of Washington, Oregon, and California, and the National Marine Fisheries Service was used as the reference. Many grids, therefore, are 30 x 30 or larger or are partial representations of a 10 grid. Islands, bays, deltas and estuarine waters that occurred in the 1:100K hydrology were included in the coverage. Any features not in fishable waters were given an ID of zero. All other features correspond to the ID shown in the Trawl Logbook. The field containing the ID is called block10-id.
