Summary

Diversity Strata, are divisions (within a Distinctive Population Segment (DPS) for steelhead, or Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU) for salmon) of contiguous areas with broadly similar physical geography and hydrology. The combinations of these physical characteristics represent differing natural selective regimes for steelhead populations utilizing the individual watersheds. These differing physical characteristics have led to life history and genetic adaptations that can enable the populations to persist in the widely varying and distinctive habitat regimes represented by the biogeographic population groups (BPG). The purpose of delineating the Diversity Strata is to guide recovery efforts across the Recovery Planning Area to ensure the preservation and recovery of the range of natural diversity of the Recovery Planning Area.

Description

******This data layer represents the northern California summer steelhead DPS ( Oncorhynchus mykiss irideus ), a subset of data from Coho, Chinook, and Steelhead Stratum - California and Southern Oregon Coast - NOAA [ds3003] .******

The basins_final data layer contains watershed boundary polygons that represent habitat areas for candidate independent populations of steelhead (O. mykiss), Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), and Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in the State of California and Southern Oregon. Watersheds were delineated upstream from candidate independent steelhead population Watershed sizes are not uniform and do not correspond to any specific order of hydrologic units, but rather, vary with the area drained by each river. Upper portions of watersheds were delineated by merging "planning watershed" units from the California watershed coverage (Calwater 2.2) created by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. However, along the lower portion of streams within the Central Valley, itself, Calwater boundaries often followed political boundaries or other features. Therefore, boundaries in the lower portion of watersheds were hand-drawn using digital elevation models (DEMs) to determine watershed boundaries along the valley floor.
