Summary

The California Monitoring Plan (CMP) salmonid monitoring areas provides an approximation of the spatial extent of past and present monitoring efforts for coho salmon, Chinook salmon, and steelhead. The areas represent the approximate extent of sampling within sub-basins, watershed areas, or regions. The dataset includes population monitoring areas in California coastal watersheds and some coverage of monitoring areas within the Trinity River and Klamath River basins. This dataset does not include all locations for existing or past monitoring programs. The population metrics summarized within these areas are focused on the viable salmonid population (VSP) key characteristics: abundance, productivity, diversity, and spatial structure. The spatial information is intended to be compatible and link with tabular salmonid population data using the GEO_ID_POL field.

Description

The California Monitoring Plan (CMP) salmonid monitoring areas and associated population data are part of an ongoing effort to summarize existing and past salmonid monitoring efforts in the areas identified by Adams et al. 2011. These data are compiled and maintained by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife with the cooperation of monitoring practitioners. Updates and associated outreach are intended to occur on an annual basis. Data were created from several sources and existing datasets: some monitoring areas were accurately depicted using the USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), other monitoring areas were approximated using the monitoring point location and the USGS StreamStats tool to depict the watershed area above that point. The areas are intended to represent the approximate extent of sampling within sub-basins, watershed areas, or regions. For example, the spatial extent of monitoring using a fixed count station is approximated by accounting for all anadromous fish habitat upstream of the sampling location. Therefore, the area is approximated by entering the monitoring location coordinates into the StreamStats tool. The resulting shapefile is then examined to ensure the watershed area did not include habitat above dams or barriers to migration. Areas were clipped when needed. The data user should recognize that errors may have occurred during production of this dataset, changes may have occurred to the external sources used post transfer, and for other possible reasons. The population metrics summarized in the associated tabular data may be regarded as spatially limited, temporally limited, and not considered a complete estimate for the population being described. The data user is advised to refer to the annual reports cited in the Source field from the tabular data for additional details regarding monitoring within the area spatially depicted.

Abbreviation Definitions: SGS = Spawning Ground Survey, RM = River Mile, RST = Rotary Screw Trap, RKM = River Kilometer, FCS = Fixed Count Station, STH = Steelhead, CC = Coastal Chinook, DS = Downstream

Field Watershed
Field description
Name of the watershed or region that contains the population.

Field Population
Field description
Name of the watershed or sub watershed that the point estimate parameters describe (i.e., Olema Creek watershed within the Lagunitas Creek watershed when the point estimate describes just the Olema Creek watershed).

Field Species
Field description
The fish species that the population and point estimate parameters describe [Coho salmon, Chinook salmon, steelhead].

Field Life_Stage
Field description
Life stage(s) that the metric describes. Usually designated by the Principal Investigator in report or communication. Use of size criteria and size criteria definitions may vary between years and monitoring programs. Parr, smolt, adult, sub-adult, Age 1+, Age 2+, YOY, etc.

Field Origin
Field description
Origin of the species described. The Principal Investigator designation is used when available. When not available, a mixed designation is used when a hatchery/broodstock program exists in the watershed or if hatchery strays have been consistently reported. A natural designation is used when there is no hatchery/broodstock program in the watershed and hatchery strays are not reported.

Field Run_designation
Field description

General designations follow this assignment structure: Coho, Fall Chinook salmon, and Coastal Chinook salmon = 1st year of survey season (i.e., 2018 of 2018-2019), Spring Chinook salmon = year of survey season (i.e., 2018 of 2018), Steelhead (winter or not designated) = 2nd year of survey season (i.e., 2019 of 2018-2019).

Field Survey_season

Indicates whether the point estimate represents a full population estimate or not [Y, N]. Criteria for a yes (Y) determination include: (1) the point estimate must not be spatially limited (N) or temporally limited (N), and (2) the estimation method must be appropriately applied.

Field Temporally_limited
Field description
Indicates whether the population point estimate is temporally limited or not [Y, N]. Criteria for a yes (Y) determination include: (1) the survey period does not cover the full-time frame (spawning period, outmigration period, rearing period, etc.) to accurately estimate the population parameter, or (2) survey frequency is limited, or (3) the peak timing is missed due to environmental, staffing, or other constraints.

Field Spatially_limited
Field description
Indicates whether the population point estimate is spatially limited or not [Y, N]. Criteria for a yes (Y) determination include: (1) the survey extent does not consider (sample from or cover) the accessible habitat for the population/species/life stage.

Field Notes
Field description
Details about temporal and/or spatial sampling/limitations, species assignment methods for unknown redds, details about AUC methods (i.e., residence times, observer efficiency), etc.

Field Source
Field description
Citation of the latest report, publication, website, or contact that identifies the point estimate and corresponding information.
