Summary

This is a spatial database compiling multiple sources of peregrine falcon observations into a standard format for comparison and management. The observations contained in this dataset may not be represented in the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) but may be included in the future. For the time being, users should utilize to both databases concurrently.

Description

The Peregrine Falcon Observations Database is a product of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW's) Wildlife Branch and Biogeographic Data Branch. It was created by the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group ( https://pbrg.pbsci.ucsc.edu/ ) then managed privately for a time. CDFW took ownership in 2011. The records generally represent peregrine falcons (PEFA, Falco peregrinus ) nesting, perching, and flying. Additional information about the falcon, the database, and submitting data can be found on CDFWs American Peregrine Falcons in California Webpage: https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Birds/Peregrine-Falcon .

This dataset represents observed nest locations for peregrine falcons, generalized to a USGS 7.5 minute topographic quad level. If you need more specific location information, please contact the listed point of contact in the metadata.

Field description
A code used by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to uniquely identify USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles (quads). The USGS quad code consists of one degree blocks sub-divided into sixty-four 7.5 minute maps. The one degree block is referenced by the latitude and longitude of its southeast corner (e.g., 38121). Individual maps within the block are referenced by an alpha-numeric code. This code originates at the same southeast corner as the one degree block and runs numerically east to west, and alphabetically south to north. This creates a grid allowing maps to be coded by the intersection of these axes (e.g., B5). An example of a complete map code would be 38121B5. The CDFW Quad Code converts this value to an integer by replacing the alpha character with a numeric equivalent (A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5, F = 6, G = 7, H = 8).

List of values
Value Nest
Description The record represents a peregrine nest

Value Fly-over
Description The record represents a peregrine that was primarily observed flying

Value Perched
Description The record represents a peregrine that was primarily observed perched

Value Use area centroid
Description The record represents the centroid of an area known to be used by a peregrine or peregrines. Area may represent a territory, home range, feeding area, or any other area of observed use.

Value Negative
Description The record represents a search of an area specifically for peregrines that yielded no observations, nests or signs of site occupation.

Value Unknown
Description The record type is unknown

Field SurveyType
Field description
The survey method used to detect the peregrines(s) or nest.
List of values
Value Aerial
Description survey conducted by aircraft, helicopter or fixed wing

Value Ground
Description survey conducted from traversing the ground

Value Nest access
Description survey conducted by accessing nest

Value Incidental
Description An incidental, non-systematic detection of a peregrine

Value Unknown
Description The survey method is unknown

Field NumTotal
Field description
Total number of peregrines detected at represented point. A null value indicates that the number of birds detected is unknown.

Field NumAdult
Field description
Number of adult peregrines detected. An adult is an individual peregrine in its adult plumage, generally after the first molt.

Field NumHY
Field description
Number of "hatch year" peregrines detected. A hatch year is an individual peregrine in its juvenile of subadult plumage, generally after fledging from the nest and within its first year of age.

Field NumNestli
Field description
Number of nestling peregrines detected. A nestling is an individual peregrine between the time of hatching and the time it takes the first flight from the nest.

Field NumEgg
Field description
Number of eggs detected.

Field NumUnkAge
Field description
Number of unknown age class peregrines detected.

Field BandID
Field description
Blue or silver USGS band number; VID band code.

Field Behavior1
Field description
The primary activity or behavior of the observed peregrine. Examples include, perch, fly, brood, feed, incubating, courtship display, territorial display, etc.

Field Behavior2
Field description
The secondary activity or behavior of the observed peregrine. This may be an inferred behavior; e.g. a bird seen flying may be assumed to be hunting. Examples include, feeding, preening, hunting, resting, etc.

Field NestOccup
Field description
Description of the nest occupancy by peregrines. (Occupied, Unoccupied, Unknown). A previously known peregrine nest occupied by a different species would be considered unoccupied for the purposes of this database. The nest occupancy field is not meant to address territory occupancy by peregrines since the purpose of the database is to capture observational data. However, the database may be used to help determine peregrine territory occupancy.
List of values
Value Occupied
Description A nest used for breeding in the current year by a pair of peregrines. Presence of an adult, eggs, or young, freshly molted feathers or plucked down, or current years mutes (whitewash) suggest occupancy

Value Unoccupied
Description Those nests not selected by peregrines for use in the current nesting season. Nests would also be considered unoccupied for the nonbreeding period of the year

Value Unknown
Description Unknown

Field NestStatus
Field description
Description of the nest status.
List of values
Value Active
Description A nest in which eggs have been laid or a nest characterized by the presence of any adult, egg, or dependent young at the nest in the past 10 consecutive days immediately prior to, and including, at present

Value Inactive
Description A nest that is not currently being used by peregrines as determined by the continuing absence of any adult, egg, or dependent young at the nest for at least 10 consecutive days immediately prior to, and including, at present

Value Tended
Description A nest with fresh mute (feces), or other signs of peregrine presence, but an egg or peregrine was never observed

Value Successful
Description An active nest in which at least one young survived to an advanced stage of development, or observed successful fledging from the observed nest

Value Failed
Description An active nest in which the eggs did not hatch or the young died before reaching an advanced stage of development

Value Unknown
Description Unknown

Field SiteCode
Field description
The 2-letter code corresponding to the region of the state the nest is located in.
