Lineage

Lineage statement
This reproductive habitat suitability model for fisher in the Sierra Nevada was created as part of an effort to update the Southern Sierra Nevada Fisher Conservation Strategy (SSNFCS) after extensive drought-related tree mortality has drastically changed conditions in the region.
Process step
Description
Reproductive habitat suitability for fisher in the Sierra Nevada region was generated from a multi-scale MaxEnt (habitat suitability model for presence-only data; Version 3.3.3k) model at 30m resolution based on 2016 vegetation conditions. We used a combination of 3 different fisher detection data from 2016-2019, dens, family groups, and females. Den data (N=114) from the KRFP were obtained from Rebecca Green and filtered to only one den per female per year within 800m (giving priority to repeat-use dens), leaving 43 records. Family group data (N=18) from the USDA Forest Service Region 5 carnivore monitoring program were obtained from Jody Tucker and filtered to one per sampling unit per year, leaving 12 detections. Female detections (N = 55) from June-August, also from the USDA Forest Service Region 5 carnivore monitoring program were obtained from Jody Tucker and filtered to one per sampling unit per year, leaving 35 detections. These three filtered fisher detection datasets were merged and filtered to only one point per year within 800m, giving priority to dens over families, and families over females, resulting in 82 points (43 dens, 12 family groups, and 27 females). For 2016 vegetation data, we used a combination of layers from two sources: California Forest Observatory and USDA Forest Service Region 5 FastEmap. This model included 12 explanatory variables: mean tree canopy cover, canopy height standard deviation, mean snags/acre for all species and all decay classes with diam>= 5, average annual total precipitation (1981-2010),mean insolation index, ladder fuel density standard deviation, mean ladder fuel density, distance to drainage, standard deviation of live trees per acre for trees with diameters>= 20, mean basal area per acre (ft) black oak, mean basal area per acre (ft) canyon live oak, and mean live trees per acre for trees with diameters>= 20. Predictor scales ranged from fine (mean tree canopy cover, standard deviation of live trees per acre for trees with diameters>= 20, and mean live trees per acre for trees with diameters>= 20, smoothed with a 150-m radius moving window), and moderate (mean snags/acre for all species and all decay classes with diam>= 5and mean ladder fuel density, 400-m radius and ladder fuel density standard deviation, 560-m radius), to coarse (canopy height standard deviation, 800-m radius, and mean insolation index, mean basal area per acre (ft) black oak, mean basal area per acre (ft) canyon live oak, all with 980-m radius). This model had a mean 10-fold cross-validated test AUC of 0.924.Model outputs were clipped to remove extrapolation areas considered less reliable north of the Tuolomne River/Tioga Road and southest of the Kern River and Kings Canyon National Park. Outputs were reclassified (high suitability for values > 0.38 and moderate for values between 0.1856 and 0.38) and converted to polygon format. All models are abstractions of reality that are created for particular purposes and should be used with caution. The fisher reproductive habitat model and maps presented here provide an approximate, landscape-scale representation of those areas of the southern Sierra Nevada considered most likely to support fisher mothers and young during that sensitive portion of the reproductive cycle when kits remain with, and are likely dependent on, their mothers. Sustaining and possibly increasing the value and distribution of fisher reproductive habitat is important to sustain and recover this Endangered fisher population. Maps depicting the distribution of modeled moderate and high-value reproductive habitat are meant to focus management attention, not to prescribe specific management actions or specific management areas. Female fishers are known to establish dens and reproduce outside of modeled moderate-high value areas, and these maps should not be used to conclude absence of reproductive habitat, dens, or fishers outside of thresholded High and Moderate habitats. We recommend managers use the thresholded version (High and Moderate reproductive habitat value) for project planning purposes, in concert with additional, local or fine-scale information where available, and field reconnaissance where possible.
