Summary

Aerial Information Systems, Inc (AIS) was contracted to create both a baseline vegetation map derived from 1990s-era imagery and an updated 2010 vegetation map for the Santa Lucia Preserve (Preserve) and neighboring properties to the west, for a total area of 25,630 acres.

Description

Aerial Information Systems, Inc (AIS) was contracted to create both a baseline vegetation map derived from 1990s-era imagery and an updated 2010 vegetation map for the Santa Lucia Preserve (Preserve) and neighboring properties to the west, for a total area of 25,630 acres. The neighboring properties are contiguous with the western boundary of the Preserve and are owned by several different organizations. These adjacent properties are: Whisler-Wilson Ranch, Palo Corona Regional Park, both owned by Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD); Mitteldorf Preserve, owned by Big Sur Land Trust (BSLT); a small portion of the Joshua Creek Canyon Ecological Reserve, which is the property of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW); and several pieces of private property owned by individuals. The vegetation mapping classification created for the project area is based on a floristic vegetation classification according to the National Vegetation Classification (NVCS) and on California statewide vegetation mapping and classification standards.

Field description
One of the concerns in this study area is the increasing mortality rate of tanoak, presumably from Phytophthora ramorum (Sudden Oak Death). Currently Umbellularia californica (California bay) is considered to be a host for the Sudden Oak Death (SOD) disease. In order to assist the Conservancy to monitor existing tanoak stands and their proximity to California bay, a Bay Component modifier was assigned only to the 2010 polygons.

Field description
Due to the increasing mortality of the Lithocarpus densiflorus (tanoak) in the study area, mapping the presence of dead tanoak is important to the Conservancy. A modifier to note the presence of dead tanoaks within a polygon was assigned only to the 2010 map. When photo interpreters detected dead tree crowns in a polygon, every effort was made to ensure the dead trees were tanoaks and not other species (e.g. coast live oak). The tree species was generally easier to identify if there was a standing dead tree crown. The dead trees, if present, were not identifiable on any of the 90s imagery, so this modifier is not mapped for the 90s era map. The tree mortality is discernible on the 2007 imagery as well as the 2010 CIR imagery. As with all the vegetation, the most current condition on the ground was captured, so the 2010 CIR imagery was used to ascertain the value of the dead tanoak modifier.

Field description
The field check attribute was used to indicate a polygon in the 2010 map that could not be assigned a vegetation type by photo interpreters using imagery alone. These polygons required a ground site assessment of the vegetation stand in question. The polygons were flagged as a question for the Conservancy ecologist to answer by being assigned a value of Field question in this attribute. Once a question was answered, the FieldCheck_2010 value was changed to Field question answered and any relevant information was put in the Comment_2010 attribute. If a polygon was not accessible, then a value of Field question not accessible was given to the polygon in the FieldCheck_2010 attribute. Due to time constraints, not all the questions were answered. The polygons having unanswered questions still have a value of Field Question in the FieldCheck_2010 attribute. These polygons remain as questions in case they can be answered in the future.

This field is considered a catchall for significant information regarding a polygon and generally contains value added information that cannot be statistically quantified by the photo interpreter. An example of this value added information is the photo interpreter noting predominant species present in the stand other than the vegetation type being mapped. Any pertinent comments from the on-site check were also put into this attribute for those polygons that were visited for the field checks.

This modifier is used to indicate that the polygon has urban (built up) disturbance within it and was mapped for both the 2010 and the 90s maps. For the Santa Lucia Preserve mapping effort, urban disturbances are defined as areas that are impacted by structures, irrigated landscaping, and impervious surfaces. Mowed grass and treated chaparral are not included in the land use polygons.
