Summary

This dataset represents the Designated Heritage and Wild Trout waters in California, current as of October 3, 2017. This dataset is intended to be used for Heritage and Wild Trout Waters Program analysis and for cartographic purposes.

Description

This dataset represents lakes, stream reaches and, where applicable, their tributary systems which are the designated Heritage or Wild Trout waters in California. The individual waters are proposed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlifes Heritage and Wild Trout Program , and officially designated by the Fish and Game Commission.

This version is current as of the 10/3/2017 additions, South Fork Smith River (additional area from the 2016 designation) and Hilton Lake number 2.

Lineage statement
The spatial features in this dataset were derived from the CDFW California Streams, the CDFW California Lakes, and USGS Watershed Boundary datasets. The code descriptions in the attribute table were obtained from the California Fish and Game Code.
Process step
When the process occurred 2015-12-1000:00:00
Description
The HWT designated streams were selected from the CDFW California Streams dataset, split and trimmed according to their respective code descriptions, then buffered 10 meters to obtain the stream polygons. HUC-12 watersheds were selected from the USGS Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) to represent those HWT designated waters that specify they included tributaries. As with the streams data, the watershed polygons may have been split, trimmed, and/or merged to fit their respective code descriptions. Polygons that represent HWT designated lakes were selected from the CDFW California Lakes dataset. To discern the separate HWT designated waters, the stream and lake polygons were erased from the watershed polygons. The three separate polygon datasets were merged into one and attribute table fields were added and records were populated accordingly.
