Summary

Critical habitat constitutes areas considered essential for the conservation of a listed species. These areas provide notice to the public and land managers of the importance of the areas to the conservation of this species. Special protections and/or restrictions are possible in areas where Federal funding, permits, licenses, authorizations, or actions occur or are required.

These data identify, in general, the areas of final critical habitat for Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog (Rana sierrae).

Description
The features in this shapefile represent final critical habitat subunits for the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog. These polygon features were digitized based on boundary delineations drawn on paper maps by the project's lead biologist. Reference data layers on the paper maps included California watershed boundaries, (Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD)), streams with arrows displaying flow direction, (National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), MaxEnt model habitat quality criteria (Derived by Roland Knapp), a hillshade surface derived from a 30-by 30 meter California digital elevation model(DEM), a polygon displaying a 3 Kilometer extant population buffer (a 3 Kilometer buffer created around extant populations of the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog), a polygon displaying a 1000 meter distance aggregation of the MaxEnt model habitat quality criteria polygons (a 1000 meter distance aggregaton polygon created by the Aggregate Polygons tool), and lastly NGS topographic data. Heads-up digitizing of the paper map delineations was performed using these reference layers as guidelines to trace the boundaries of final critical habitat subunits. The final critical habitat subunits were digitized at a scale of 1:24,000 using a UTM Zone 10, NAD 83 Coordinate System. For more detailed information on the lead biologist's criteria for delineating the final critical habitat subunits, please refer to the "Final Critical Habitat Designation" document, under the section "Criteria used to Identify Critical Habitat".
