Summary

Under contract to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Bay-Delta Region for use in conjunction with the Delta Regional Ecosystem Restoration Implementation Plan, CDFW created a fine-scale vegetation map of portions of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. The mapping study area, consists of approximately 725,600 acres, of Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is 2 acres for land use and vegetation; exceptions made for isolated land use, water, and critical vegetation types which were mapped to a 1-acre MMU. The floristic classification follows protocols compliant with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and National Vegetation Classification Standards (NVCS).

Description

Under contract to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) and the Bay-Delta Region for use in conjunction with the Delta Regional Ecosystem Restoration Implementation Plan, CDFW created a fine-scale vegetation map of portions of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. CDFW conducted field reconnaissance assistance for this project, as well as accuracy assessment (AA) field data collection; and Jeff Kennedy, Kristi Lazar, Jeanne Taylor and Jahalel L. Tuil [University of California Davis Information Center for the Environment (ICE)]; Brad Burkholder, Daniel Burmester, Curtis Hagen, Diana Hickson, Todd Keeler-Wolf, to assist in the AA field data collection. CDFWs Vegetation Classification and Mapping Program (VegCAMP) provided in-kind service to allocate and score the AA.

The mapping study area, consists of approximately 725,600 acres , of which approximately 104,600 acres are natural vegetation, 555,100 acres agriculture and urban development, and 65,900 acres are open water or inundated lands. These acres were apart of Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties. Work was performed on the project between 2005 and 2007. The primary purpose of the project was to further CDFWs goal of developing fine-scale digital vegetation maps as part of the California Biodiversity Initiative Roadmap of 2018.

CNPS under separate contract and in collaboration with CDFW VegCAMP developed the floristic vegetation classification used for the project. The floristic classification follows protocols compliant with the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and National Vegetation Classification Standards (NVCS).

The vegetation map was produced applying heads-up digitizing techniques using both the spring 2002 Stockton, Sacramento, and Delta High Resolution (1-foot) Orthoimagery and summer 2005 NAIP (1-meter) orthoimagery served as the base, in conjunction with ancillary data and imagery sources. Map polygons are assessed for Vegetation Type, Percent Cover, Exotics, Development Disturbance, and other attributes. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is 2 acres for land use and vegetation; exceptions made for isolated land use, water, and critical vegetation types which were mapped to a 1-acre MMU.

Field reconnaissance and accuracy assessment enhanced map quality. There was a total of 131 mapping classes. The overall Fuzzy Accuracy Assessment rating for the final vegetation map , at the Alliance and Group levels, is 85% percent with 9 types falling below 70% .

More information can be found in the project report, which is bundled with the vegetation map published for BIOS here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=18211 .

Supplemental information
Notes on preparing map ds 292 to be added to BIOS: In the original map and report, there were a reported 129 map classes. With this map prepared for BIOS, the total map classes have expanded to 131. Some specific Map Classes that were worked on were the Agriculture and Urban Map Classes. The Agriculture Map Class has several MCVNames under the Map Class that were transferred from the original Land Use codes created by AIS to better describe the agricultural units surveyed. These MCVNames would be Barren, Cropland, Deciduous Orchard, Evergreen Orchard, Irrigated Grain Crops, Urban, and Vineyard. For the Urban Map Class, the Map Class used to be split between Urban and Barren MCVNames. These names were merged together into Urban. Rarity Ranking: Rarity ranks for various types in this map have been updated utilizing the NatureServe Conservation Status Assessments Rank Calculator Version 3.186, and are current as of November 2024. Rarity ranks are subject to change due to changing threats and trends and as ranking methodologies are further refined. Please check CDFWs Natural Communities page for the most up-to-date rarity ranks (https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/VegCAMP/Natural-Communities). Constraints
Limitations of use

Study area boundary:

The mapping study area, consists of approximately 725,600 acres, of Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Sacramento, San Joaquin, and Yolo counties.

Minimum Mapping Unit (MMU):

The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is 2 acres for land use and vegetation; exceptions made for isolated land use, water, and critical vegetation types which were mapped to a 1-acre MMU. Features were occasionally mapped below MMU or minimum width. These features were so distinct or important compared to the surroundings that omitting them would have distorted the representation of the area.

Field description
The Sensitive Flag is a field where exceptions to what is in the ranking for an alliance or a determination for a group based on alliances are captured. For example, an alliance might be ranked as G4/S4, because it is broadly distributed in the state and covers a considerable area. However, every association within that alliance is considered sensitive because it isn't broadly distributed or is locally threatened. Such an alliance would have Sensitive = Y because everywhere the alliance is represented the association community is sensitive. States for this field include: "AllAssocOfAlliance" (described above); "AllAllianceOfGroup" (similar to AllAssocOfAlliance but used when all the alliances in the group are ranked as sensitive); "AllAssocOfMapClass" (used when the map only contains a subset of associations known in the state and all of these are sensitive); "SecondryFromSplit" (this can occur when the alliance or other community/level which was mapped was subsequently split into multiple, both sides of the split are known to be present in the map, the primary is not sensitive but the less common community/level from the split is sensitive); and "AllAssocFromRegion" (when it is known that only a subset of associations from alliance exist within the ecoregion that the map is in and all these are sensitive).
