Summary

The purpose of this data set is to improve understanding of the ecology of northern pintails in California and serve as baseline data on which to measure impacts of changes in the Central Valley landscape on pintail ecology. DATA ASSUMPTIONS AND LIMITATIONS: All UTM coordinates for the points used in these data were generated using NAD27, Zone 10 datum although a number of points were in Zone 11. These data were converted to NAD83, Zone 10 datum and to Teale Albers projection for display on the BIOS site. Any error due to using Zone 10 datum instead of Zone 11 datum should be minimal considering the nature of the study. Positional accuracy of individual locations is limited by: uncertainty in telemetry locations (observer error) and possible data entry errors. Although all reasonable attempts have been made to limit these factors, positional accuracy for any individual point should not necessarily be considered minimal. The appropriateness of multiple scales of inference is the end-user's responsibility to justify and the originators assume no responsibility for incorrect or misleading uses of these data.

Description

Using radio-telemetry, female northern pintail (Anas acuta) survival, distribution, and movements during late August-March in Central California were determined during 1991-92, 1992-93, and 1993-94. Accuracy of individual data fields has been reviewed. Data collection for 1991-94 is complete although additional years may be added. WHAT EACH RECORD REPRESENTS: Each record contains data about a duck's location, as well as information about the duck and hunting conditions at the time of observation.

Supplemental information
METHODS: The study was organized and conducted by staff from the U.S. Geological Survey, Western Ecological Research Center. Pintails were captured with rocket nets and females radio tagged during 29 August-6 October 1991, 31 August-5 October 1992, and 28 August-25 September 1993 in the Tulare Basin (n = 42 AHY, 20 HY), Mendota State Wildlife Area (n= 71 AHY, 47 HY), and the Grassland Ecological Area (n = 115 AHY, 124 HY). Radio transmitters (20-21 gram) with back-mounted harnesses were attached in 1991 (n = 115) and 1992 (n = 123), but in 1993, either harness (n = 98) or 8 gram spear-suture transmitters (n = 83) were attached. Using telemetry systems mounted in vehicles or aircraft, status (location, alive, or dead) of each pintail was determined 1-2 times a day during the hunting season and at least every other day during non-hunting intervals in San Joaquin Valley, and at least weekly in other Central California areas from the date of the first pintail capture until 20 March each year (202-205 days). Other areas, including northeastern, coastal, and Salton Sea California; Malheur National Wildlife Refuge vicinity, Willamette and Klamath Basins in Oregon; the Carson sink in Nevada; and the western coast of Mexico, were also searched 1-10 times each winter to locate pintails not found in Central California. Two bearings from known locations were obtained using a truck-mounted dual-Yagi null-peak telemetry system to minimize time between bearings and because preliminary tests showed more bearings did not increase accuracy in our flat, open study areas. Pintail locations were calculated using a modified version of XYLOG and UTMTEL (Dodge and Steiner 1986). REFERENCE: Dodge, W. E., and A. J. Steiner. 1986.
