Summary

WHAT THE DATABASE WAS DESIGNED TO DO. Breeding landbird surveys were conducted at these sample locations for an inventory of bird communities present in these habitats in order to develop habitat relationship models and to validate habitat relationships models from the California Wildlife Habitat Relationship (CWHR) System. HOW THE DATABASE WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED. This data can be used by land managers, consultants, and land owners for research and monitoring.

Description

These data represents the results of point surveys for birds in west-slope Sierra Nevada forests. There is accompanying habitat data (see Central Sierra Hardwood Study - Habitat) for the survey plots. Please be aware that the coordinates of the points displayed in the text data display of this data set are California Teale-Albers NAD27 projection, but that the data point viewer displays these data points and the background layers in California Teale-Albers NAD83 projection.

TIME PERIOD COVERED.

The data was collected during the 2003 field season (May-July) by field crews working for California Department of Fish and Game.

GEOGRAPHIC EXTENT OF THE RECORDS.

Point count locations extend from El Dorado to Tuolumne counties in the central Sierra Nevada between 2000-6000 ft elevation.

NUMBER OF RECORDS.

There are 64 stands with four landbird point counts per stand.

BASE DATA STRUCTURE.

The file is a flat excel table which gives the number of landbird species found in each stand. Each stand is represented by two key fields called "Quad" and "Grid" which relate to habitat data from the same plots in another data table.

WHAT EACH RECORD REPRESENTS.

Each record in the table represents the number of point count locations, average number of individuals, and total number of individuals counted in each stand for each species detected during the counts. There was only one count done at each stand in 2003.

Supplemental information
HOW DATA WERE COLLECTED IN THE FIELD. We randomly selected 64 historical vegetation plots which were spatially random and located between 2000-6000 feet elevation in the central Sierra Nevada between El Dorado and Tuolumne counties. These plots occur on private and public lands. The landbird survey effort we conducted consisted of four 100-m radius plots located within forest stands of varying homogeneity. Within each stand the first plot (center) was located at the historical vegetation plot location, and the other three bird survey plots were located 150 m away on three different compass axes 120 degrees apart. Each point count was ten minutes long each giving a total of 40 minutes of survey per stand. The data gathered from each plot include the identification of each bird species observed in the plot and the number of independent observations to individual bird so that abundance could be estimated. WHO DID THE INITIAL DATA COMPILATION. Bird data was mostly compiled and analyzed by Barry Garrison with the California Department of Fish and Game. BASIS FOR GEOGRAPHIC COORDINATES. Historical vegetation information from historical plot locations were the source for baseline forest habitat conditions. In the early 1930's, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) developed a vegetation map for the forests, woodlands, and shrublands of California. The project was known as the vegetation type map (VTM) project, and all VTM data are archived at the University of California, Berkeley. These locations were put into a GIS and relocated on the ground for our habitat sampling and landbird surveys.
