Exit 101 at Highway 1 go towards Lompoc. Go approximately 14 miles on Highway 1. Look for Jalama Road and the sign for Jalama Beach County Park. Turn left onto Jalama Road and travel 14 miles on the very windy road until you reach the end. Be sure to have enough gas, the nearest gas station is in Lompoc. From the Santa Barbara office take 101 north approximately 8 miles. Take Highway 217 toward UCSB. Exit 217 at Sandspit Road. Turn left at stop sign (turning right takes you to the airport). Go approximately half a mile and turn right into Goleta Beach County Park. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0208 BB Carpinteria This site covers a two mile stretch of beach starting from the east end of Carpinteria State Beach northwest to Sand Point. From the Santa Barbara office take 101 south approximately 12 miles. Exit 101 at Carpinteria Avenue. Turn right on Palm Avenue. Follow signs to the entrance of Carpinteria State Beach. If you have California Fish and Game Id you can get in for free, other wise get a receipt and the entry fee can be claimed on your expense claim. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0215 BB Gaviota This site covers a nine mile stretch of beach starting from Gaviota State Park south to Refugio State Beach. Start at the north end of the site and work your way south. This way you wont have to across the highway repeatedly as you sample. Stop along the highway anytime you suspect fishing activity. Beach access is limited to only a few places. Look for cars parked along the side of the highway. From the Santa Barbara office take 101 north approximately 35 miles. Exit at Gaviota State Park. Drive west from Santa Barbara (approximately 15 miles) on Highway 101, look for a left turn lane in the median strip less than a mile past the Winchester Canyon offramp on Highway 101. The road to Ellwood pier is directly opposite this point, across the eastbound lanes of the freeway, among a grove of eucalyptus trees. After the road crosses the railroad tracks, veer to your left and park in the dirt parking lot which fronts a fenced clearing above the beach. There are several well defined trails that lead through gaps in the fence which go down to the beach. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0217 BB Summerland Drive east from Santa Barbara, take the Summerland exit from Highway 101. To your right you will see the entrance to Lookout County Park. The park is a grassy, tree-lined area overlooking the beach below. There is a steep footpath leading down to the beach from the park. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0223 BB Santa Maria This site covers a four mile stretch of beach starting at the Santa Barbara County line to Mussel Rock. From the Santa Barbara office take 101 north approximately 76 miles to Santa Maria. Exit on Main Street (166). Go west on Main Street for approximately 14 miles to Rancho Guadalupe Dunes County Park. The park is open from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. The gate is closed and locked at 8:00 pm be sure that you leave the park before 8:00 pm or you will be locked in. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0224 BB Lion Rock This site covers a two mile stretch of beach from Point Sal to the south end of Point Sal State Beach. From the Santa Barbara office take 101 north approximately 76 miles to Santa Maria. Exit on Main Street (166). Go west on Main Street for approximately 9 miles to Highway 1. Go south on Highway 1 for approximately 1 mile. Turn right on to Point Sal Road. After approximately 5 miles turn right on to a dirt road and start to climb a hill. Follow this road to the end. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0225 BB Purisima Point to Lompoc Landing There is no access to this site. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0226 BB Canada Tortuga This site is also called The Civilian Beach or The Wall. This site covers a four mile stretch of beach from Lompoc Landing to the Santa Ynez River. Access to this site is from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The easiest way to gain access to the base is to be driving a state car. If you are driving a state car you will not need a pass to enter the base. If you are not in a state car you will need to call the base ahead of time to arrange to have a pass waiting for you at the gate. Go approximately 28 miles on Highway 1 to the main gate of Vandenberg Air Force Base. Once inside the base you will be on California Street. Go approximately 1 mile and turn left on 13th Street. Go approximately 1/2 mile. Turn right on New Mexico. Follow road to the Civilian Beach. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 06 083 0227 BB Reef This site is also called Minuteman Beach and covers a four mile stretch of beach from the south boundary of Point Sal State Beach to Lions head. Access to this site is from Vandenberg Air Force Base. The easiest way to gain access to the base is to be driving a state car. Exit 101 at Highway 1 go towards Lompoc. Go approximately 19 miles on Highway 1 until you reach Lompoc. Take highway 246 approximately 10 miles to the end of the road. There is a small unmarked dirt parking on the right side of the road. Walk across the railroad tracks and down a large sand hill. This site starts here and goes for approximately six miles south to Pt. Pendernales. This is a very isolated site, there are no phones or bathrooms available. If you can not park in the small dirt lot at the end of the road because there is a locked gate barring your way, then go back to Ocean Park Road. Be sure to have enough money to get out of the parking lot. Drive all the way to the far end of the parking lot. Go through the automatic gate. Be careful to park only in spaces that are meant for cars.
